Interview with Fu Zhih-Chi at Thursday 3rd of May 2018
Chih-Chi Fu
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
FZ: I didn't discover my passion for design until I was 21. It started by the idea of I wanted to escape from my biology study. I discovered that although I enjoyed doing all the research on the biology field however, I don’t know what I should do in the future with it. Along the path discovering my interests, I found out that I like to create things and I would like to transcend the positive vibes through my design to my audience. I hope that when people see my design, they could feel happy, excited and interested. Since then, I started to consider how to do something positive and meaningful by design.

FS: What is "design" for you?
FZ: Design not only provide what you want, but also discover your potential needs that you desire.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
FZ: I would like to design something that can truly help out those people who needed it or design for the cultural heritages that needed to be protected. For me, design is not only for people who are financially sufficient like us, instead, I would like to help more people with my design if I’ve got opportunities.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
FZ: “The tent jacket” by Angela Luna, very innovative, great design and with high level of sophistication. More importantly, the story behind the jacket is to care about the refugees and the homeless population.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
FZ: When I'm taking a shower and when I'm commuting on my motorcycle.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
FZ: The function and the quality of the final product.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
FZ: Proud and touched.

FS: What makes a design successful?
FZ: A successful design should refine our daily life. Some products could bring the convenience of life, others provide the mentally freshness and satisfaction. What really matters is the innovative design offers the public a better life and solve the problems in the society.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
FZ: Quality

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
FZ: Be socially responsible and be as environmentally friendly as possible. I'm not a fan of fast fashion since it promotes impulsive consumption and creates plenty of waste.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
FZ: First, collect lots of information, then analyze it and figure out the direction of the design. Do lots of experiments about your designs and find out the best solution for it.

FS: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
FZ: Work hard, stay hunger, be strong and determined.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
FZ: The capability to embrace diverse ideas and be creative

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
FZ: Illustrator & Photoshop

FS: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
FZ: I will set up a timeline and force myself to finalize the project by the end of deadline. The perfect solution could never exist however you could find the best solution within your ideas. A project won't be successful if you can't finish it on time and execute it.

FS: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
FZ: It really depends. When I start a project I will set up a timeline and try my best to finish it before the timeline.

FS: How can people contact you?
FZ: They can contact me through email: gearcellstudio@gmail.com or the facebook page of my studio https://www.facebook.com/gearcellstudio/

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
