Interview with Harun Ayaydın at Friday 30th of November 2018
Harun Ayaydın
FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
HA: My design works started in high school. When I succeeded in entering Construction Design major, I had some hand drawing but hadn’t known what I may capable of. When I started to school, firstly I took technical drawing course and also in order to enhance my drawing skills, I took private lessons from major academics in Turkey. My influential role model and teacher was Master Architect Hüseyin Başçetinçelik. If it has not been with him, I would not be that much devoted to this profession.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
HA: Currently I do not own a company. I’m continuing my Master degree and working some companies as assistant designer.

FS: What is "design" for you?
HA: Every moment in our lives actually is a work of design. We make designs during the day intentionally or unintentionally. This process also can be described as making something out of nothing or shaping out of nothing.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
HA: In this era, I like the modernism most, but I also like the other types as well.

FS: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
HA: A hotel frontal in Taksim / İstanbul

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
HA: Stainless steel and marble are my favorite materials.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
HA: In every time and at everywhere.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
HA: I give importance to functionality and proportions. I prefer golden proportion rules as analysis methods.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
HA: It changes according to the character of design.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
HA: I experienced infinite happiness and excitement. Up until today, when the buildings and interior places are completed that I have designed by myself, I got emotional and excited at every time.

FS: What makes a design successful?
HA: Making understandable every piece and being able to take please from design.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
HA: There are no good or bad designs. There are perceptions and tastes.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
HA: I can be inspired by almost everything. For example, in Istanbul, I have designed a sales office building and this design’s inspiration came from a closet cover’s movement. Or design of sports center inspired by a climbing man’s body form.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
HA: It is addressing to people’s taste, depends on proportions and also is multi-functional.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
HA: I live in Turkey and this country is so important for me. It helps me significantly in terms of design process. I’m trying to pursue big designers’ approach such as Sinan the Architect.

FS: How do you work with companies?
HA: Depending on design sales or for short periods.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
HA: Of course. When I started a new work or designing a new object, I spare the most shining ideas that sparked in my mind aside, and start drawings about them. When I approached some degree in design, the calculations and proportions take place and I look at their visual values. Then, the materials are included in the process and after that I consult to many people, take notes and make revisions for multiple times.

FS: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
HA: Lightning, TV Unit, Coffee Table, Decorative objects, Stairs

FS: Can you describe a day in your life?
HA: I wake up and then go to the school or office. In my leisure time, I do sports, participate in trips and draw some sketches.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
HA: My gaze should look beautiful after all proportions are over. Trust my feelings. Then I consult the people around. The golden ratio will produce designs that look beautiful all the time.

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
HA: Observation.

FS: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
HA: Computer Programs: Autocad/ 3ds max /archicad/ sketchup /photoshopHand Tools: Pencils, compasses, Golden proportion ruler and miters.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
HA: It is a question that is hard to answer. Because I do love and observe each design types separately but if I had to choose one of them, it will be the Art deco design type due to affiliation to my personality.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
HA: To deepen my design knowledge and to be known in many countries and being able to sell my products in those countries

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
HA: For now, I work alone but according to the size of work, I can get assistance.

FS: How can people contact you?
HA: harunayaydin@gmail.com / archayaydin@gmail.com / info@harunayaydin.com

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
