Interview with Kairo Kusamoto at Sunday 18th of March 2018

FS: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
KK: I think that design that emphasizes concepts and concepts, which is a stage prior to going to the market, is essential. I believe that it does not only affect the design world but has the possibility of expanding human values and gaze.

FS: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
KK: At the postgraduate master's program, I was studying the value of design using semiotics and phenomenology. Currently we are studying the concept of time in the field of phenomenology in philosophy and the value of new design from concept of labor in anthropology.

FS: What is "design" for you?
KK: Not something physically but something or service enriching people by giving new perspectives and values.

FS: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
KK: conceptual and Theoretical.

FS: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
KK: same Q04.

FS: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
KK: I like everything material to create my concept.

FS: When do you feel the most creative?
KK: When we got new insight through research and research through books and literature.

FS: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
KK: Concept construction and its materialization.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
KK: Whether you could present an answer that appeals to people's values.

FS: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
KK: Whether you could present an answer that appeals to people's values.

FS: What makes a design successful?
KK: After designing, think about being criticized after a while.

FS: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
KK: Whether or not you are thinking about concepts from the cutting edge. Whether or not the concept is connected to the design.

FS: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
KK: Enriching personal life more by stimulating human life and values.

FS: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
KK: I believe that not only new designs using new technologies and new materials due to the evolution of technology but also designs that will be visible by criticizing new things for old things. I think that a lot of small markets and communities are born, not a big market.

FS: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
KK: When we got new insight through research and research through books and literature.

FS: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
KK: Even when you receive a theme, even when you create your own theme, we will first build a concept linguistically. Then I will create a diagram and think about design accordingly.

FS: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
KK: I live in Japan. Because my country has few conceptual designs, it has a big influence on my design that conscious of the concept.

FS: Can you talk a little about your design process?
KK: Even when you receive a theme, even when you create your own theme, we will first build a concept linguistically. Then I will create a diagram and think about design accordingly.

FS: What is your "golden rule" in design?
KK: nothing

FS: What skills are most important for a designer?
KK: concentration.

FS: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
KK: I enjoy the design of furniture, interior and architecture. Because i learned about them in art university.

FS: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
KK: Apart from the content of the design, I think that it is never backward calculated considering the future in the person living in the design. Continue fighting anyway.

FS: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
KK: myself.
