| DESIGN NAME: Cross Tent PRIMARY FUNCTION: Housing INSPIRATION: The main problem of post disaster temporary housing units is the delay in installation because of the complex mounting details of existing tents. The other one is the dependency on ground and weather conditions. These limitations became the inspiration to design a ground-independent and easy to set up and transfer housing unit. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Cross Tent, emergency post disaster housing unit is easy to install in a short time, by 2 people in 5 minutes, to provide shelter for more people. It is faster and more easy to store before and after use. Its folding structure makes more units to be transported at one time. 18 folded units can be transferred by truck at once. It provides housing for 90 people with 15 sqm living space for each when installed. The unit is self-powered with flexible solar panel for emergency energy needs. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Crosstent does not require any installation tools for installation. Two people can unload it from the vehicle and installed in minutes. It is ready to use when installed. It is self-assembled when it is opened with its scissors shaped structure. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2014 and finished in March 2014, and was exhibited at AFAD Turkey Prime Ministry Disaster & Emergency Management Authority, Disaster and Emergency Training Center. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main frame is constructed with Standard aluminum extrusion profiles. The profile fixing points are supported with polyamide parts. The tent fabric is unflammable and water-proof and is sewed to be tightened when cross profiles are set up. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 18 folded Cross Tent units can be transferred by truck at once. It provides housing for 90 people with 15 sqm living space for each when installed. The folded dimensions are 25cmx270cmx560cm and installed dimensions are 220cmx270cmx560cm. The main objective is to meet the vital needs of the people affected by these problems as soon as possible. While designing Comtent, it is aimed to ensure the normalization of social life quickly and to create a safe living space for those affected by the disaster. CHALLENGE: The most difficult phase of this project was to find a user who lost his home after the earthquake. However, by reviewing the literature and interviewing with experts, the information of user behaviour has been obtained.
