PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Photocatalytic Floorlamp

INSPIRATION:
Urbanization, is the word of our times. In 1950 only 30% of the world’s population lives in the city but it is projected that by 2050 over 70% of the global populations will be urban dwellers. With such rapid growth cities are faced with undaunting levels of pollution unheard of just a century ago. As architects and designers we are entering into a new era of environmental thinking that has to either help our planet, recycle some of our creations and consider the biosynthesis of humans with nature. Inspired by the photosynthesis of leaves, this is how Foglia came to begin SUGO's journey into Biophilia design.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Foglia was an inspiration taken form nature where sunlight activates photosynthesis. During the day when FOGLIA is placed near any visible light it will work to cleanse the environment through the process of photocatalysis while during the night when the light is switched on, the cleansing action continues. Harmful elements such as Carbon Dioxide, Formaldehyde, Nitrogen Oxide as well as odors are eliminated by photocatalysis. The Lamp is also designed with screens that can customized its aesthetics infinitely. It is product that not only looks contemporary and aesthetically pleasing but also helps the well-being of humans and our planet.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The design operates as a simple lamp and can be controlled via WiFi through any connected device to switch between colors, on/off and dimming functions. Since the design is entirely photocatalytic treated, once any source of light and moving air passes through the design, the nano-particle will be activated and bacteria, viruses and odors will be eliminated. It is this simple. The effect will also last for a lifetime if cared for properly. Just like photosynthesis in nature.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Project started in 2009 and was officially launch to the market on November 2018. Second production will be started later in the Q1 of 2019

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Through my backpacking travel in Thailand way back in 2008, i was fascinated by the beauty of banana plantations and this started the design process of FOGLIA. The first prototype was just a simple lamp but in 2014 when i was educated about the process of photocatalysis the design evolved with its shape and integration of this technology. The design also took on the function of interchangeable accessories in 2016 to make it adapt better with any interior or exterior designs.

CHALLENGE:
It took us years to came about with this design as the geometry was altered many times when we started to introduce new functions such as interchangeable screens. The material and paint finish also went through many modifications to maximize the effect of photocatalytic treatment and we have to wait for this technology for over a year to evolved into our requirements as initially photocatalysis only work in UV light which are harmful to humans.
