ReLife Recycled Pavilion

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
100% Recycled Pavilion Design

INSPIRATION:
Our planet is facing a crisis of degradation and pollution and a major contribution is human’s insatiable dependence on materialism. Fast fashion, fast furniture, fast food are some of the culprits and our planet’s finite resources simply cannot support this. As a new generation of Biophilia design we are now slowly becoming aware of all our actions has consequences to the planet we live in. We wanted to introduce one of the most sustainable booth design for Shanghai Design Week 2018.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Wherever Kevin Chu go around any trade shows he sees a lot of waste generated after only 4-5 days of fancy exhibition. COC was invited to the Shanghai Design Week 2018 thus decided to design and construct a pavilion using all recycled materials. Composed of recycle plastic turf, derelict steel beams for structure, upcycle wood fibers as cladding panels and 35 dead birch trees we wanted to re-introduce temporary architecture that uses zero waste ideology.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Getting inspired from all the discarded trash from visiting and participating in numerous trade shows and exhibition, COC decided to source discarded materials as its main inspiration for the design. Plantations are one of the most vital component in the health of our ecosystem and it is with this thought that COC decided to re-use plants that have been wilted to become the main focus of their design.

CHALLENGE:
The hardest part was finding the right type and breed of dried trees to be suspended for the pavilion. It was also quite difficult to insist on using low-V.O.C and water soluble paint to cover the tress to retain the environmental theme.
