DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Mountain Beauty

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Necklace

INSPIRATION:
During a trip to the mountains of my home country I fell in love with the beautiful Rhododendrons covering the mountains. I tend to express myself through my art whether it is my jewelry, my cakes or my paintings. I wanted to capture and lock the memory of the wonderful trip with my family somehow and since I was starting jewelry school I was inspired to immortalize my feelings in a jewelry form. The flower and waterfall suggest the beauty in the wilderness of nature and is a reminder that creativity flows like the waterfall and blooms like the flower without inhibition: wild, unstoppable, and enchanting.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This was one of Kajal's first projects which came from her heart. She felt that nature beckoned her to translate it's beauty and show it to the world. It is a beautiful multi purpose jewelry which can be used in 3 ways: as a necklace, as a pendant or as a statement brooch. It is a unique theme because this is the first time this beautiful flower that grows up wildly high up in the himalayan mountains has been transformed into a jewelry. The right and left diamond cascade has also been skillfully designed and crafted so that it is flexible and sits perfectly on the body.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
A convertible necklace made in 14K yellow gold. Centerpiece and necklace connects by 2 detachable clasps on either side to the diamond necklace. It stays hidden on the back. It is very easy and straightforward to assemble or disassemble while still keeping the aesthetics perfect. Depending on the occasion or mood of the wearer it can be worn as a full necklace or can be disassembled and used separately as a statement piece pendant on a chain or also a brooch. The pendant can be hung from the back on any style of chain upto 3mm diameter. There is also a pin at the backside which allows the wearer to use it as a brooch.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in December 2016 in Singapore while Kajal was still a student in jewellery school. First she hand drew the concepts and ideas and then perfected the design in CAD. Then she went to manufacture it in Thailand as she could find good technical support for CAD jewellery in Singapore. It was finally ready in June 2017. It took 6 months in total to create it from concept to actual piece.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
While working in the CAD, since the flower I have chosen is not a common one I had some difficulty getting the production team to understand the design. The centerpiece is a 3D version of the beautiful Rhododendron flower, pave set with Rubies and Tsavorite Garnet. Connection to the diamond set necklace by 2 clasps on either side which allows it to be easily detached and it converts into a pendant on a chain or can also be used also a brooch.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The necklace when fully assembled is length 168 mm * width 135 mm* height 14mm. The centerpiece alone when used as a pendant dimensions are length 45 mm * width 36 mm * height 14 mm. For the centerpiece to be used as a pendant any style and thickness of the chain upto 3mm width can be used.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Research 1. objective: to find how people felt about the the concept about the multifunctional jewellery and also the extent of use of Rhododendron in jewellery. Data collection: By talking to people, visiting different jewellery stores, researching Pinterest and searching the internet. Results:Almost all people said they liked multifunctional jewellery. Couldnt find jewellery with Rhododendron theme although many based on different flowers. So it seemed like a good project idea to go ahead.

CHALLENGE:
Since the central theme is not just 1 flower but a bunch of florets, and she wanted to do a 3D design, it was challenging first deciding how to put the concept in paper. The ease of manufacturing also had to be taken into consideration. Then she wanted to add diamonds in the necklace to depict the flowing waterfall. But as it was one of her first necklace designs which was not made on order but as an experiment for the designer, it had to fit within a budget. Lack of technology in Singapore made her look overseas and it was manufactured in Thailand. Because it is not a common flower another challenge was explaining her vision to the manufacturer.

NAME:
Kajal Naina

PROFILE:
The brand Kajal Naina is passion poured over possessions. The jewellery line is named after the designer herself and the collections have assortment of elegant pieces that can be worn on a daily basis and can also be collected as family heirloom. As a qualified jewellery designer, Kajal Naina creates one-of-a-kind collections and bespoke items of jewellery for clients around the world. She was born and raised in Nepal, and has since spent time living in Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong. Kajal says that jewellery has always been a big part of her life and her culture. For her, jewellery, and gold, especially, is a connection to her mother, who’s no longer living. As a child, she loved watching her mother get ready for a big event. She remembers how her mother would choose a colorful sari from her big, steel closet that was just for saris. How she would lay the sari out on the bed, and then, with Kajal by her side, how she’d open the steel safe in the prayer room and pick the jewellery to go with it. While the safe was open, her mother would show her different ornaments; necklaces, earrings, bangles, rings and tell her stories about each one. Many, which she had received for her wedding. Some which came from Kajal’s grandmother, who had handed over the pieces over the years. Some, which her mother had picked up on trips to India, Thailand, Hongkong, Singapore, where she would always buy some small piece for Kajal as well. When Kajal started getting older, her mother started taking her to the store to pick out something special for every birthday. Always gold. So when Kajal sees, touches, and wears gold, she see both her past, her present and her future. She sees herself as a child, joyfully getting small pieces of gold as symbols of love from her parents and grandparents on birthdays and special occasions. She sees herself now, a confident and compassionate designer, who feels special every time she puts on her beloved jewelry pieces. And she sees herself years ahead, feeling safe and free. Kajal says that from her upbringing, investing in gold jewelleries represents a safety net. Even if she never sells her personal collections, she knows she has the leeway to take a year off or to handle whatever unplanned events life brings me. Most of all, she sees glamour. Jewellery is a way to look extra nice, to feel special all night when you’re at a party or out to dinner. Her love and passion for life and the strong motivation to use her talent to help people find their happiness is what makes every one of her creation so special. People usually buy jewellery during happy times: birthdays, anniversaries, proposals, weddings, holidays, and just to say “I love you.”  She loves that she gets to share in that happiness and bring joy in peoples lives. She loves making things that make others feel beautiful.
