| DESIGN NAME: Icon Residence, Mont Kiara PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Development INSPIRATION: The project is for three high-rise residential which are all environmentally-cons UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project emulates the romance and fantasies of renowned waterfront resorts and towns in the Mediterranean. The challenge in the design is to assimilate these qualities and to adapt them to suit the tropical character of this region yet achieving that visual consistency and creative diversity. Our design attempts to challenge the conventional solution and explore new options that test the limits of the creative diversity of Mont Kiara which provides green areas both physically and visually. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: A three dimensionally changing unit profiles, bridges linking the internal and outdoor space creating an exciting play of vertical and horizontal interface of terraces, gardens, deck and sky gardens connecting at high levels, which provides both physical and visual link to the natural green, thereby introducing a soft relief against the backdrop of high-level/high-dens PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2009 and finished in May 2015 in Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Architecture, Building and Structure Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Energy Efficiency - the project is designed to promote green thermal indoor for occupants' comfort whilst allowing maximum day-lighting. To further enhance energy savings, a host of green features such as energy efficient Inverter Air-Conditioners that provide up to 60% energy savings are allotted for standard residential units; T5 lamps with electronic ballasts; and heat pumps to provide heating and maintaining a constant temperature in the swimming pools for penthouses, thus reducing energy usage and providing savings to owners. Green Label Materials: Certified under Singapore's Green Labelling Scheme, content materials such as plasterboards and wood composite products have been incorporated. Water Savings: To reduce potable water usage, Singapore's Water Efficient Labelling Scheme is used as a guide for the selection of water fittings, thus reducing overall water consumption. It's rainwater harvesting is link to a landscape irrigation system to reduce base building potable water consumption. Indoor Environmental Comfort: to maximize indoor environmental quality for residents, all internal wall surfaces are coated with Low-VOC paints. Another environmental feature of the swimming pools is the use of saltwater chlorination systems to eliminate swimmer's problems like red stinging eyes, skin rashes and chemical odors. Additionally, the verdant rooftop garden reduces roof thermal transference to the residences. Innovative Technology: Sate-of-the-art pneumatic innovations like the Automated Waste Collection system will automatically detect waste inlets that are full and uses a vacuum system to transport the household waste to a central waste location. Sustainable Management: A permanent building maintenance team with certified green mark professionals is engaged before practical completion with an operation and maintenance manual provided for the building maintenance team to ensure a green and sustainable building and environment. The design attempts to capture the flow of the internal with the external spaces, thereby allowing the sense of flow from the units into the decks and garden spaces. Like the Mediterranean architecture Mont Kiara has a constant juxtapositioning of strong natural forms that is both elegant and sculptural. The varied spaces and forms give a complex and visually stunning development that fits naturally into landscape and ambience of Mont Kiara. CHALLENGE: The orientation and the design layout are deliberately sited diagonally to avoid the direct East-West sun and at the same time avoid the monotonous long stretch of linear development, creating a more interesting and sculptural façade. Each apartment is well articulated and juxtaposed with cross ventilation throughout the year and for some they can also enjoy sunrise and sunset in the comfort of their living spaces.
