DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Lantern Pendant

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Jewellery

INSPIRATION:
My inspiration for this piece is taken from medieval and symbolic jewellery, e.g. talisman amulets, charm bracelets and natural forms. It allows the wearer to personalise their piece of jewellery by choosing their own motifs and precious stones to adorn the piece. The experience of wearing the Jewel is also enhanced by the addition of a perfumed component. Motifs can represent anniversaries, achievements and experiences that the wearer has encounter throughout life. The Jewel is multi faceted to allow for the application of several motifs/stones and is made for generational wear.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Lantern is a modern day interpretation of a traditional locket / charm bracelet. It is unique as it displays its symbols and charms on its exterior and also offers a sensory experience for the wearer. Scent being a highly emotive experience. Each Lantern pendant is unique and can be designed with symbolic motifs, specific to the wearer. The Lantern pendant also can encase a scented wafer which adds a sensorial and emotive experience for the wearer. The Lantern pendant can also be worn as a purely aesthetic accessory.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The Lantern is a pendant necklace that delivers the wearer their own unique experience, combining a sensory and originality of a designer jewel. By using a pendant/necklace format it offers the wearer/creator an alternative to a bracelet or traditional necklace locket. The motives are visible and the unique pear shape allows for maximum delivery of a chosen scent. The ‘Lantern’ pendant is a substantial jewel and offers the wearer a very pleasurable experience.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in April 2015 and finished in July 2016 in Australia, and was exhibited in Gallery Fifty Four, Australia in August 2016

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Manufacture: Cast, hand fabrication and stone setting. Materials: Sterling silver, 18ct gold, precious gemstones, semi - precious gemstones.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Study and research into Medieval objet and jewellery. Study and research into incense burners. Practical testing with materials that can be impregnated with a perfume scent Research Objectives: To create a piece of jewellery that reflects aspects of its historical foundation whilst using modern techniques to manufacture.

CHALLENGE:
To create an object that was unique to the wearer. Similar to a charm bracelet, I wanted to create a piece that told a story and marked a journey. I also wanted to add a sensory experience to the design. The creative challenge for me was to design a jewellery object that combined both these elements. The Lantern pendant does this very successfully by was of design.
