DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Soytun

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Tableware for raw fish

INSPIRATION:
The form and functionality of Soytun take inspiration from a vertebra of bluefin tuna. The packaging design is inspired by the ancient cardboard boxes of natural history museums used to contain specimens.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Soytun is a multifunctional ceramic piece designed for the increasingly popular tasting of the various forms of raw fish, such as sashimi, sushi, tartar, etc. Soytun is the third project for a line of functional eco-design called "NATURA IMITATIS" (from Latin, meaning "imitating nature"). Its organic design inspired by the shape of a fishbone makes it an elegant sculptural piece, resulting an excelent gift, an ornament to reflect as well as a conversation starter around a table

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The design accommodates all three necessary accompaniments for serving the fish: soy sauce, wasabi (spicy mustard), and chopsticks (they can be rested against the side when not in use) The name "Soytun" comes from the union of "soy" and "tuna". When Soytun is not used, it can be stacked one by one, taking the form of a fishbone and serving as a sculptural and decorative piece for our kitchen.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in March 2014 in Madrid (Spain). In October 2014 were finished the prototypes of the piece, its packaging and the contents of the design book. In November 2014 began production of ceramic piece in Talavera de la Reina (Toledo / Spain), and production of packaging and design edition of the book in Madrid / Spain. In December 2014, this design was first presented to the public at the Central Market Design. Disseny HUB. (Barcelona) Spain.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
In manufacturing of Soytun, we use painstakingly crafted enameled high-temperature stoneware. Beneath its base, each SOYTUN is signed and numbered by hand. The gift box is made entirely of recycled cardboard, making it a singular example of eco-packaging, fully respectful of the environment. Each gift box contains two pieces of Soytun firmly attached to the bottom of the box through perforations and a fixing rubber bands. The resistance of the packaging and firm fixation of the pieces, makes it a highly suitable packaging for e-comerce.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Size: 140 mm, 60 mm, 40 mm (H) Gift box size: 165 mm. x 165 mm. x 70mm. (H)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Due to the increased consumption of the various presentations of raw fish, we were looking for a specific design for this use that could meet several functions at once, it could be easy to use and it would be associated to a fish by its shape. One of the largest and most worldwide-coveted tuna is the bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus). We study in depth the structure and shape of the vertebrae, making many different prototypes, cherching the most beautiful sculptural and functional shape, while remembering the elegant shape of a fishbone of tuna.

CHALLENGE:
The main challenge in the design process of Soytun was the construction of the final shape of the piece, basing on the biological characteristics of a vertebra of bluefin tuna. Through a complex interpretation from the original model, we arrived at a perfectly recognizable form, serving for each and every one of the functions that this design should accomplish.
