DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Eclectic Indian penthouse

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Penthouse

INSPIRATION:
The ethos of design was an unabashed Indian identity , coexisting with international design and luxury standards . Where antique heirlooms enjoy pride of place alongside modern pieces from across the globe . The Sun , the Wind, the Trees , are one with the indoors , maximizing the elements and views . A 34 ft. high painting by hand on the staircase wall , also highlights the concept , derived from the "Tree of Life". Nature by way of materials used and landscape envelopes the living spaces, lending to a relaxing ambiance.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The aim was a home that was a warm & lived in, not contrived or artificial . A residence, luxurious not flashy or ostentatious .Its roots very Indian , but still contemporary and chic. The use of wood and rustic finishes, flooring, minimal use of glass and no steel , enhanced the effect . An interior to be a mirror of and extension to the owners personalities , also the designer in this case. A juxtaposition of heirlooms, artifacts and furniture, collected over time. A sensibility, truly their own.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Cutouts on floor slabs to facilitate and enhance communication , interaction and visibility . Entrance at mid level floor no. 5 , to necessitate only negotiating one flight of steps at most times .Family bedrooms and common room 4th floor , media room , entertaining on 6th floor , Dumb waiter from kitchen directly to 6th floor pantry . Lift accessible at 6th floor by use of access cards only .

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Located in medium size town, Kolhapur , of population less than 1,000,000, situated mid way between Mumbai and Goa , in the state of Maharashtra , India . Took 18 months for completion.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The staircase entailed detailed design of reinforcement due to large span of cantilever . a Fabricated beam extends from floor level up to 6' ht. Along the supporting walls from which the treads extrude . The 11' long cantilever breakfast counter in the kitchen , is also supported by a heavy fabricated member from opposite ends .

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
5th FLOOR (living / entrance floor) - 185 sq m. terrace -47 sq m. 4th FLOOR(bedroom/family floor)-200 sq m. terrace -20 sq m. 6th FLOOR(media /entertainment) - 67 sq m. terrace - 98 sq m . Plunge pool-19 sq m.

TAGS:
Indian, eclectic, penthouse , Nupur Magdum , Nature , sky, wind, lanscape

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The cantilever staircase was pivotal to the design . The structural fabrication entailed experimentation and trial and error to reduce the vibration play, as the span of each tread is above 1.2 m .It resulted in a heavy 4ft. deep structural beam running along in the supporting walls .The terrace finishes are I.P.S (Indian patent stone ), which is a long lost permanent finishing technique for which labour had to be trained in material application and finishing .

CHALLENGE:
Being a small town , the dearth of suitable interior materials and accessories , as well as furniture etc. was the massive challenge , necessitating immense travel for procurement and selection even of basic tiles , granite , wall papers , electrical fittings etc .

CLIENT/STUDIO/BRAND DETAILS
NAME:
Nupur Magdum

PROFILE:
” Sernya Spaces” was formed by Arch. Nupur Magdum .. in 2007, at Kolhapur , Maharashtra ,India, with the goal of providing imaginative architectural and interior solutions within the economic and developmental constraints of all clients . The company name is derived from an auspicious Buddhist Symbol “ SERNYA “, which signifies resurrection of eternal life, rebirth etc. The golden fish symbolizes the auspiciousness of all living beings in a state of fearlessness, without danger of drowning , migrating from place to place freely and spontaneously, They may also be taken to symbolize the eye of perception as fish can see through muddy water. Our firm's ethos is linked to all of the above traits … we aim to create spaces that stimulate all the senses , are eclectic and aspire for a certain earthiness and connect with all that’s natural .We aim to explore lesser known territories and push the envelope further each and every time .Our design reflex is peculiar to each project and its inherent constraints and trying to turn them around to characterize our design .. Our process extensively involves employees, consultants and clients . Thankfully for this project the client was the designer herself so the gap in communication or practical and aesthetic needs was non existent .
