Camaro | advanced collection

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Next Level of Wooden Eyewear

INSPIRATION:
We never wanted to imitate any manufacturer or their products we want to be unique in the field of eyewear production. All of us grew up in the Tyrolean Alps, we love the beauty of the countryside and the unlimited possibilities for enjoying nature. The Alps recharge the body and soul and are an endless source of inspiration for our work.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
ROLF Spectacles wants to take the initiative to achieve new heights in wooden eyewear. We boldly introduce our new „advanced”collection | model "Camaro", adding natural texture to our frames and a highend three dimensional design. ROLF’s research and development team has created an innovative hinge for its eyewear made of wood and a specialized ROLF lens-glazing system. The ROLF wooden eyewear is produced completely without any metal parts or screws, and it is very easy-care thanks to its special surface treatment. Each ROLF frame is produced by hand requiring many work steps at the plant in Tyrol / Austria.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Where others stop, we are just getting started. We are delighted to show other creative minds that you can build something from the circumstances in a rural countryside and even contribute to the entire region. Outsourcing is not always a requirement... We are also making advertising imagery ourself. We want to honestly communicate who we are and what we do. For once, we aren't models; we are just having fun with what we are doing. Also, it's not "only" about eyewear for us. There is much more behind it.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
In 2oo7, we started out carving eyewear frames in our basement with the simplest tools. The first prototype was ready after only a month, but results were not satisfactory. We needed to learn lots of things. CNC machining, press processes and creating new machinery... 2009 we showcased additional prototypes and for the first time we were able to gauge responses to our product. People were thrilled, but the desired quality was lacking because of imprecise processes. Without support from the banks, our project seemed headed for failure despite the positive feedback. But thanks to our families, we were able to continue and invest in new machinery and optimized production processes. Finally, in August 2009 we could submit the first perfect set of ROLF glasses for the Silmo d‘Or. Being nominated was incredible for us - winning was beyond comprehension! We are convinced that the young generation focuses more and more on products they know who made them and where they come from. There is a change happening out there - back to traditional craft and cultures - and the willingness to pay more for honest products.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The glasses are unique in terms of the materials used and the production techniques implemented. Almost all machinery needs to be built or retrofitted specifically. In the early stages, moped brakes, old actuators and other items were used provisionally because they lacked the money to outfit machines for prodution. In order to be able to bend the first parts into shape, the first pieces of wood was pressed from a living room table with the mechanical milker from a neigboor, who had retired from farming. The press is still in use. Even the stone frames had their start this way. Nowadays, precise machines are used until the point where the frames are passed on to highly sensitive additional processing that is done by hand.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Our glasses are unique in terms of materials and production techniques. Almost all machinery needs to be built or retrofitted specifically. In the early stages, we used moped breaks, old actuators and other items provisionally because we lacked money to outfit machines for production. One example is the Silk-Cut 3oo, which produces the special thread for our glass fittings. It was made entirely from scrap parts from our friend, the junk dealer, and still manufactures all ROLF threads. And in order to be able to bend the first parts into shape, we pressed the first pieces of wood from a living room table with the mechanical milker of our neighbor, who had retired from farming. We still use the press today. Even the stone frames had their start this way. Nowadays we use precise machines up until the point where the frames are passed on to highly sensitive additional processing by hand.

CHALLENGE:
ROLF Spectacles is always searching for new and unique materials that correspond with the company philosophy. The challenge is to try new materials that has never been used before in the industry. Thus arose the idea to develop of a pair of glasses with the natural materials of wood and stone. ROLF >woodstone< frames are made out of shale stone and wood. To attract attention as a young company we must ensure our frames carry the latest in trends and technology, the combination of wood and stone is one of our latest designs that encompass this notion.
