Pain and Suffering Research Branding by Sharon Webber-Zvik

DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Pain and Suffering

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Research Branding

INSPIRATION:
I was always fascinated with how artist approached science. How in Leonardo De Vinci's time, artists conducted thorough and fundamental study of the human body through drawing and engravings of dead people. The captured facial expressions in those sketches, combined with my personal envisioning of what the subjects experienced in their last seconds before passing away inspired me to conduct my own, humble, exploration on the fine line between art and science.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
I had never imagined that as an artist and a graphic designer I would be hired to brand an Interdisciplinary academic research on pain and suffering. Accepting this meaningful challenge, I knew that I should not use the trivial visuals already conceptually bonded with those topics. My design explores suffering in different layers: philosophical, social, medical and scientific. From my personal point of view that suffering and pain comes in many faces and forms, philosophical and scientific, I chose the humanization of suffering and pain as my basis. I studied the analogies between symbiotic in nature and symbiotic in human relations and from this research I created characters that visually represent the symbiotic relations between suffer and the sufferer and between pain and the one in pain. This design is an experiment and the viewer is the subject.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Shock, horror and great fear. Turning the viewers inside-out and forcing them out of their comfortable place and into looking at their souls and personal suffer. There is an intentional transformation from the original state of naive viewers who sit on a comfortable chair in an air-conditioned room and expect to find an informative, clear and emotion-free website into a totally different state-of mind in which the viewers are sent to learn about pain and suffering from an empathetic place. I compare this transformation to the minute in time after receiving bad news. Only after this minute passes one can really understand the innocence that were there before. After the landing page, visitors are invited to visit the more informative pages of the website, and experience all the other elements of the design - but now they are cleaned and filtered of their original arrogance. I let the viewers go through this journey with the weakness and wisdom as if they have already passed it.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started in October 2011 and was made public in November 2012. The art related to this project still continues...

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Graphics and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
My work in this project is comprised of several techniques. I always have a very clear vision in my mind of the visual I am about to create before the actual creation. I then start collecting the various materials needed for my art and creation. Some I find in image banks and manipulate them to suite my needs, and some I draw by hand. The balance between the purchased and the original creations is undefined and unpredicted - it is shaped in the process as the visuals from my mind and soul come to life. In my free drawings, some I create with pencil and paper, scan them and finalize my work on my MAC; Others I draw directly on my MAC using my Wacom Intuos Pan Tablet. Eventually, everything ends up in Adobe Photoshop

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The technical requirements for an SEO friendly website, a user friendly CMS and a very budget-limited solution for this academic research lead me to choose WordPress as the most suitable platform. In similar concept to the visual design where various elements are combined and modified to achieve the outcome I wanted, I designed a WordPress Child Theme based on the skeleton of WordPress's "TwentyEleven" theme and by using tailor-made page templates achieved a visually remember-able yet convenient and informative website.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
I had to understand what it means to suffer. I had to understand what pain is and which kind of pain leads to suffer. From that point, my mind drifted to a philosophy of souls coming down to this universe to suffer. I was eager to check the relationship between the person who suffer to his/hers pain and suffering. I learned about symbiosis and was fascinated with this theory of one in pain who is nourished by it, and the pain evolving by this situation. I started taking pictures of people, trying to catch in my lens the face of pain and suffering. I took pictures of myself, my relatives and finally had the courage to go out to the streets. Homeless people were great inspiration for me. Their pain was so clear and substantial, and so was the fact that the humankind is not willing to see pain, so we tend to ignore it. I changed. My perception of life changed. One thing was sure, they were in so much pain, physical pain (due to diseases or drug addictions) that their suffer was eating them alive. The symbiosis was clear to me as an artist. Assembling those experiences and photos to emotions and theories made me understand how suffer looks like. How pain looks like. (*Photos from my research can be happily shared)

CHALLENGE:
Due to the complexity of this subject, and due to the fact that my research was emotional and overwhelming, I had to force myself to remain objective and not to be led to one form of pain. I had to check my art several times, and to start over more than once. I had the honor to handle this topic. My art is evolving as this research and hopefully my art will make this research unforgettable to viewers.
