| DESIGN NAME: Invisible parking fortification Vechten PRIMARY FUNCTION: Parking lot and entrance national museum INSPIRATION: The invisible military landscapes of the Dutch Waterline Cradle to Cradle thoughts UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a parking space that does not look like a parking space. This makes the project unique because it is successful in what it wanted to achieve. This is a unique car park for 250 cars, touring cars, shuttle busses and 100 bicycles that is invisible when there are no cars. It looks like a meadow with concrete anti-tank elements and storks nests on high poles. When the cars are parked the fort and concrete Bunkers are still visible. The anti tank elements, parking tiles shows a military order. When the cars are parked the military order becomes visible. In the evening the stork nests seem to be the armatures for the light OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The entrance path is used for all traffic. There is an entrance element with barrier. The dynamic traffic as there are shuttle bus, touring cars stay on this part, at the roundabout can step off the busses. The individual cars drive to the long stay parking meadow. The footpath leads through the meadow with concrete bunkers to the entrance of the fortification Vechten. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design work started in januari 2011. In april 2013 the parking lotwill be opened. The project is along the A12 near Utrecht in Holland. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The area is a composition of grass, trees, concrete paths, parking tiles and anti-tank elements. The whole parking lot can be removed without distressing the water flows, soil and archaeological monument in the underground. The concrete is made of re-used old concrete and of concrete without cement. Te lighting is subtle with an amber colour and led. The bats, that live in the fortification, are not disturbed by this light that is only turned on when there is an activity at the fortification. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 3 hectares TAGS: C2C, parking lot, concrete grass tiles, Dutch Waterline, fortification Vechten, military landscape, invisible RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We did research on the characteristics of the Dutch Waterline. The quality of the place and the specific archaeological site. We investigated on materials because of the Cradle to Cradle principals and the bats who hibernate in the fortification. CHALLENGE: Making a parking lot specific for this location in The Dutch Waterline, on top of a underground national monument of the Romans. It is an invisible military landscape that in normal use is an agricultural meadow, but that can change into a water landscape so the enemy can not go through. How to make an invisible parking lot and express the military landscape? Using the thoughts of Cradle to Cradle for landscape design and the materials.
