DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Clairely Upcycled Jewellery

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Upcycled Jewellery

INSPIRATION:
A need to use material that would ordinarily go to waste. The decision was made to design products to be able to upcycle the materials from the production of my Claire de Lune Chandeliers. Thus CLAIRELY (obviously) was born. The name also reflects part my personal philosopy, which is to have transparency, clarity, in my life, and dealings.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Beautiful, clear, upcycled acrylic is a wonderful and rewarding project. The pieces which make up collections all tell stories on their own or worn several together. They are meant to empower the wearer who can use the pieces with strong symbolism, and also create moods by the way the pieces are combined when wearing.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
My jewellery is inspired by my retrospective look at my childhood and the pleasant memories there. I am strongly inspired by the influences that were present in the 60's and 70's. Acrylic is a wonderful material to work with, very rewarding. Although this is just a plastic, the value comes in the designs and the work connected to having a finished product. The last collection LUCKY DOZEN, had it's start with 2012 being the year of the Dragon, so in addition to dragon pendants, this collection grew with symbolism of horses and horse shoes, and had to include pieces celebrating Jamaica's 50th year of Independence.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Ongoing and organic. The whole line started late 2007, and the first collection was launched in NY, USA at the ICFF show there in May 2008. The line, now comprising of seven collections have since been shown in Chicago, USA, London, UK, Berlin, Germany, France, Norway and Jamaica. The workshop is located in Copenhagen.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Laser-cutting allows for complete freedom of expression when designing the pieces.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The packaging of most of the pieces - a CD box - meets a multitude of criteria. The use of CDs is in harmony with the transparency theme, allowing both retailer and consumer to see immediately the contents. The slender packaging minimizes on storage, and provide simultaneously an in-built display unit. But more importantly, the repurposing of a product not much used today is very fitting.

CHALLENGE:
As my experience has been in lighting and decor products, the addition of another area/genre of products has its challenges in marketing.

PROFILE:
This line - inspired by using the waste materials from the production of Claire de Lune Chandelier, has unfolded into a considerable number of collections - all telling stories, all representing very personal glimpses into the philosophies of the designer. The packaging - repurposed product - a CD, this from the music industry, and with the attached promotional material presented from an entirely different industry - the medical industry.
