PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Table Lamps

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration behind creating the Quarry Collection was to celebrate the beauty of stones from our Indian quarries, which are stunning yet often underestimated. The goal with these lamps was to use thin layered natural stone sheets like marble, sandstone, and slate to design timeless pieces that can illuminate and complement a variety of spaces. The duality of the lamps is intriguing. They exude beauty when they are lit but also have their unique charm in daylight.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Quarry Collection features lamps made from thin layers of marble, sandstone, and slatestone sourced from Indian quarries. Handcrafted by artisans, these lamps exude beauty when illuminated and possess a unique charm in daylight. With the texture of real stone, they offer sustainability and cost-effectiveness through reduced processing, handling, and breakage issues, as well as lighter weight compared to traditional stone lamps.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The lamps are operated using a table lamp switch. The transformation occurs when the beautiful grains and textures of the stone sheet illuminate, completely altering the look of the lamp.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started with 2 lamps in October 2022 in Mumbai, India, and was exhibited at Raw Collaborative in Baroda. More lamps were added to the collection in April 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The metal frame of the lamps are carefully hand fabricated using mild steel with a powder coated grainy texture to complement the natural texture of the stone sheet. Thin layered natural stone sheets from stones like marble, sandstone, and slate are used for making the lamps. They are powder coated to complement the natural texture of the stone sheet.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Online and offline research explored lighting marketplaces and physical stores to find affordable stone table lamps. Visual data from websites and personal networks revealed a scarcity of affordable designs. This served as a starting point to figure out how to create a non expensive stone lamp. This led to extensive research, and it was finally decided to use thin layered stone sheets for making table lamps, which would help keep the cost of the stone lamps relatively low.

CHALLENGE:
The creative challenge was to use thin layered natural stone sheets innovatively to create lamps. Fixing the stone sheets to the metal frame of the lamps was a challenge, considering the lamps are handmade, which was eventually improved upon with multiple prototypes until we achieved the desired quality. Additionally, for the lamps with two parts, fixing the bottom part to the upper part of the lamp without affecting the perfect illumination throughout the lamp was also challenging.
