DESIGN NAME:
Floating Island

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Art Exhibition

INSPIRATION:
1997, IW Magazine was launched. As a bi-monthly magazine that reports on the aesthetics of living space and design trends, we have been thinking about exploring the essence of the publication and giving it an interpretation. In every meticulously crafted story, we expand the narrative by synthesizing the view and discovering depth through the details. This is the first special exhibition of IW Magazine's 25th anniversary, the team expects to express the value of the pass-years knowledge through the curation.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Double Covers Installation: Utilizing the limited space scale to develop endless aesthetic depth. Centered on our characteristic double covers collection, the preliminary issues, by the time sequence, are exhibited to the public for the first time. Brand Showcase Island: Select Scandinavian and Italian design brands that have had a profound impact on the history of furniture design. Aesthetic Special Lecture: Returning to the essence of media, the exhibition invites Taiwan's renowned architectural scholars and photographers to share with readers the aesthetic experience of life.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Just like the initial mission of IW magazine, 'reports on the aesthetics of living space and design trends', we wish to contribute to the improvement of national aesthetics and implement as Rodin, the French sculptor, said: 'Beauty is everywhere. It is not that she is lacking to our eye, but our eyes which fail to perceive her.' As an independent media, we wish to through our modest power, provide the public another stage and perspective for appreciating beauty.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project finished in November 2023 in Taiwan.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
In this exhibition, we focus on how to make the main visual cover installation as an emotional communication with readers, instead of just a backdrop. 40 double-covers selected from 153 issues were presented at the exhibition, adopting the form of transparent acrylic plate for output, in a penetrating and lightweight manner, along with a chronology of twenty-five years of important events, let it could be unrestricted in the 190-square-meter site, let the viewers as immersive in a quality magazine.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The Venue is only 190 square meters with a long and narrow layout. The team expected to create a comfortable and interesting traffic flow and, thus, located the 9-meter magazine cover installation in the center, which not only breaks the original rigid space planning but makes it extra two unequal triangular areas that with full of scale tension. Firstly, it gives a strong visual and a deep sense of spatial form; secondly, the lecture seats can be unfolded in a fan-shaped, making the event a small theater, and also shortening the distance between the speaker and the audience.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The entire exhibition not only showcases our magazine's historical highlights with internationally famous brands, PP Mobler, Gufram, Memphis Milano, Flos, and Smeg but also invites two well-known representative cultural figures to share their professional views through lectures. In summary, by taking 'life' as the fulcrum, 'aesthetics9; as the focus, and 'perseverance' to express the opinion, the IW team wishes to evoke a clash of readers' points of view during this unprejudiced reading experience and also injects new thoughts into a cluster of buildings of historical value.

CHALLENGE:
The exhibition building is a municipal historic site, thus all structures must be connected with external objects and not touch the building itself. To this end, the IW team chose 'aluminum square columns' (truss structures) that are commonly used in music concerts as the main structure of the double-cover installation. The 9-meter device uses 4 trusses in total, which are connected in series with flat irons. Its Thick and solid characteristics make the 80 acrylic panels hanging below extremely safe. It not only solves the load-bearing problem but is also reusable, which will not cause waste.
