| DESIGN NAME: Arkhe PRIMARY FUNCTION: Furniture Collection INSPIRATION: Arkhe Collection is a tribute to the beautiful amphitheaters dispersed throughout the Mediterranean geography and to all the history, culture and myths they whisper to our collective consciousness. As a lucky kid growing up in the Aegean coast, the visits to these majestic remains of ancient times was an indispensable tradition of our summer vacations. These visits always left me in awe, giving a larger than life feeling to the mind and soul of that little kid I was back then. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Arkhe collection is a graceful combination of functionality with sculptural posture. Natural beauty of travertine and wood, exquisite craftsmanship and inspiration coming from ancient amphitheaters of the Mediterranean give the collection its timeless appeal. The design plays with geometry to create unique surfaces that appeal to the sight while dividing the furniture surfaces into areas with different functions. The pieces have different geometric variations to appeal to varying spatial needs. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Arkhe collection provides functionality, emotional experience and uniqueness through its minimal, sculptural forms and strong visual effect. The surfaces created on the furniture appeal to the sight while dividing the furniture surface into areas with different functions. The collection blends with different interiors as it can be customized according to user needs and desires by a choice of different geometric and material alternatives. Its minimal design provides ease of use and cleaning. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The production phase of the project started in March 2023 in Istanbul and was completed in August 2023 in Istanbul. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Arkhe collection is produced by skilled craftsmen from natural materials of travertine and wood. Both travertine and wood parts of the pieces are produced through a combination of CNC and craft production processes. Customization is also offered with different stone and wood options. The pieces can be produced from solely stone blocks, from solely wood or from a combination of stone and wood. The pieces are made to assembly and can be disassembled to be shipped flat pack. The assembly is made with stainless steel connector pieces. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Standard dimensions for round coffee table: W 1020 mm x Depth 1020 mm x Height 350 mm Standard dimensions for square coffee table: W 970 mm x Depth 970 mm x Height 350 mm Standard dimensions for oval coffee table: W 1720 mm x Depth 920 mm x Height 350 mm Standard dimensions for oval console table: W 1260 mm x Depth 435 mm x Height 772 mm Standard dimensions for round mirror: W 600 mm x Depth 600 mm x Height 50 mm Customization in dimensions is also provided. TAGS: sculptural, minimal, poetic, modern, coffee table, console table, mirror, customization, natural materials RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Many sketches, computer models and small-scale models were made to optimize the overall dimensions, to decide on different dimensions for the steps that create the various surfaces on the pieces. Later through an interaction with the local craftsmen, the details regarding surface operations and assemblage joinery were decided using prototypes. CHALLENGE: The major challenge of the project was related to getting the desired material and visual effect and quality on the intricate surface machining with different materials like unfilled travertine and wood. Several small scale trails were made with different travertine and wood types before starting the production of large scale products.
