DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Ribbon

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Street Bench

INSPIRATION:
Ribbon draws inspiration from body posture and curves when people rest naturally. The bench is crafted based on five common outdoor resting postures. The design simplifies the interface between body and furniture to create the bench’s profile curves, using smooth transitions between these five profile curves to create a meandering, comfortable street bench.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Five postures are studied and used to shape the bench’s profile curves. This design approach ensures the bench accommodates these postures, offering a more comfortable resting experience. Additionally, this bench not only adds aesthetic value as an urban sculpture but also blends well with street side planter.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The bench features five profile curves designed to accommodate most common resting postures: tucked-in, deep, straight-up, lean back, and lounging. Unlike traditional street benches, it offers a more comfortable resting experience and seamlessly blends with street side landscaping.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The bench is flexible for installation in various settings, including city plazas, community squares, promenades, and similar locations intended for people to sit and rest for a moment.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Individual wood frame pieces are connected by steel rods through pre-drilled holes, rods can be covered by wooden spacers; each wood piece is fasten by threaded rods and nuts.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The bench wood frames material is Plywood, connected by steel rod. All wood frames are center-spaced 50mm apart, are each 35mm wide, with varying perimeter. The overall wood volume used is under 3 cubic meter.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Through observation and sketching, five common resting postures were identified: tucked-in, deep, straight-up, lean back, and lounging. Simplified curves representing these postures were used to shape the bench's profile, creating a smooth, unified design. The wooden slats offer a dual visual effect—semi-transparent when viewed from the front and appearing to be smooth and uniformly patterned, giving it a tactile and visually rhythmic quality when looking from the side.

CHALLENGE:
The seamless transition between the profile curves blend their differences into a singular form. The slatted design addresses drainage issues, making the bench applicable for both indoor and outdoor settings.
