DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Luminous Island

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Exhibition

INSPIRATION:
It is the second year of the Penghu Music Festival. Different from the last time with the theme of 'Chasing Wind', this year the concept is to enter the ocean world of Penghu in the fall and winter. All the light art installations are inspired by marine creatures, and the imaginative underwater world is presented in the works. The exhibition area is turned into the Penghu Ocean Pavilion and starts a journey belonging to the 'ocean and island'.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
1. Innovative lantern production: Unlike the traditional structure of lanterns, which is usually made of iron and fabric, the design team added special and delicate LED lights to the fabric. 2. Contextualized Artistic Atmosphere: This time, the Luminous Island Ceremony has contextual art to set up the entire exhibition area, creating an 'underwater world'. 3. Illuminated Corridor-Riding the Waves: Penghu is famous for its ocean scenery, so the design team presented the concept of water on the lanterns at the entrance of the Illuminated Corridor. Various sea creatures echo the theme.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
They used three-dimensional, mechanical, and mobile techniques to create wonderful and diverse works. These innovative lanterns give the audience an experience like being in the underwater world. The design team used contextualization and lanterns to reproduce the local marine ecology of Penghu to create a 'Luminous Island Ceremony' that is exclusive to Penghu. The innovative lanterns are well received by the audience. Especially, the movable 'Lantern Fish' and the mechanical flower lanterns are the favorite works of the public.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project finished in August 2023 in Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The design team used fiber optics in the 'Swaying Spirit' area to shape a marine kingdom. The fiber optics are soft and easy to bend, so they can be processed into different shapes. There is no risk of electric shock, and the color of the fiber optics can be changed automatically without a high-voltage transformer. In addition to installing LED lights to outline the lantern vividly, mechanical devices are installed to allow the lantern to open and close vividly.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The route follows the theme. After passing through the 'Illuminated Corridor' from the 'Luminous Island Ceremony' at the entrance, the audience will see a parade of lantern fish and mechanical lanterns, which provide them with a brand-new experience. There are corridors at the entrance and exit of the exhibition area to form the atmosphere of 'entering the underwater world' and 'leaving the underwater world'. In addition, considering the large number of people, the aisles should not be too narrow, so there is enough space between the lanterns.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Different from the last time with the theme of 'Chasing Wind', this year the concept is to enter the ocean world of Penghu in the fall and winter. All the light art installations are inspired by marine creatures, and the imaginative underwater world is presented in the works. The event combines local 'sea creatures', 'islands', and 'oceans' to turn the exhibition area into the Penghu Ocean Pavilion and start a journey belonging to 'the sea and island'. There are 13 light art installations in the exhibition area.

CHALLENGE:
The biggest challenge was the geographical characteristics and climate of Penghu. Since Penghu faces the sea the exhibition area is located at the seashore, and the exhibition period lasts for more than a month, the lanterns must be made of thicker rust-proof and corrosion-resistant materials. All the iron parts had to go through several layers of processing to keep the lanterns in good condition during the exhibition period. In addition to the fragility of fiber optics, the structure of the lanterns was strengthened to cope with the weather.
