DESIGN NAME:
Minimum Aesthetic Space

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Sustainable Packaging

INSPIRATION:
Most of the eyelash extensions cases used for professional use use use plastic cases, and no efforts have been made to collect and reuse them. We propose a design that solves this problem. By using this package, small salons can also engage in sustainable activities. Because it is for professional use, it is environmentally friendly. Compact and highly visible design that understands functionality and treatment space when in use. A structure that calculates the overlap like magic.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Functionality and environmental friendliness for an eyelash extension treatment make this packaging unique. First of all, it is environmentally friendly, as they are consumed in large quantities for commercial use, and the amount of plastic is reduced by more than 80% compared to standard extension cases. Secondly, the inside of the package is carefully calculated and designed to prevent each delicate eyelash extension from touching each other. Lastly, it is beautifully stored in less than two-thirds the space of conventional packages.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Package for delicate eyelash extensions. Slide the contents out of the sleeve. When you pull it out of the case, there is a dotted line engraved on the backing paper, and when you cut along it, the backing paper spreads out. Only the amount you want to use can be taken out. The remaining extensions can be stored in the transparent sleeve case, so you can check the remaining amount without opening the case. The compact case (W22mmD22mmH120mm) holds approximately 3,000 eyelash extensions. Each extension with a different curl will not overlap.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Project presented in Japan in April 2021 and awarded the Good Design Award 2022 in October 2022 (Japan)

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Packaging Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The structure of the package, which opens on the side when slid open to reveal the product, is an update of the standardized structure of highly specialized products. When stored, the package takes the form of a compact prism, and the design is designed with usability in mind, with easy-to-understand identification by color and notation. The use of plastic is reduced to reduce environmental impact.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Product dimensions: 22mm x 22mm x 120mm In the conventional method of storing and storing eyelash extensions, the eyelash extensions are placed flat on a plate, which requires a plate with a larger area than the size of the eyelash extensions, making it uncomfortable to store and transport because it is not compact. In addition, both the plate and the case that holds the plate are made of plastic, which is undesirable from the perspective of global environmental protection due to the recent trend to reduce plastic dust. As a result of diligent study to solve the above issues related to the placement and storage of eyelash extensions, a wide variety of eyelash extensions can be stored compactly and efficiently, and the eyelash extensions can be easily picked up during treatment. The purpose of this proposal is to provide a convenient eyelash extension storage case suitable for operation to reduce plastic waste.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We researched a number of eyelash salons and found that many of the salons had a large number of different types of packaging and that the packaging was not as well known as it should be. Most of the packaging used for professional eyelash extensions is plastique, and even small salons store numerous types. We also recognized the problem of the lack of movement to convert plastics into a resource due to the large number of small and medium-sized companies and individual stores in relation to the size of the market and devised a paper-based, compact package. We also found that visibility during treatment was important. For this reason, we decided to use a case with a visible inside to show the remaining amount and a simple display with numbers and icons. We especially calculated the shape of the three-dimensional box, which holds the lashes so that they do not overlap. We designed the box so that extensions of various lengths and curls do not overlap.

CHALLENGE:
We had to fight against industry wisdom. It was believed that paper extensions could not store delicate hair extensions. It was also difficult to design a perfect placement of 3,000 eyelash hairs in a world of only 22 mm square. On the other hand, we pursued the convenience of eye-lists (practitioners). We studied their movements to find the easiest way to find and remove the eyelashes, and repeated many prototypes. A user commented, "When you pull it out of the case, there is a dotted line engraved on the backing paper, and if you cut along the line, the backing paper spreads out. It becomes easy to use at once there. A user commented, "While my wagon is full of hairs alone, this is a great way to save space. For eyelashes that bring out the beauty of women, the most important aspect of this project was to combine beautiful design with functionality and social sustainability, considering the characteristics of professional use.
