PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Sustainable Hotel

INSPIRATION:
With the high development of the city, natural environment will inevitably shrink or disappear within cities, people are gradually moving away from nature. Moreover, many old buildings were abandoned especially in mega cities, idle waste of spaces. To create natural buildings that coexist with nature and plants, have become a new landscape in contemporary architecture. Reborn of the building by combining environmentally friendly building materials, soft light ambient and greenery plants, to create a hotel escape in the city.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
To refresh and reborn an abandoned hospital building for years, a sustainable recreation hotel was proposed. Most of the original appearance from the old building is preserved, maximizing sunshine and natural breeze to flow into the building, and the space is decorated and integrated into the environment with the lowest consumption materials and in the simplest way. Full of vines and climbing plants cling on the pillars in the hotel lobby, lively plants decorated in guest rooms and rooftop bar, creating the whole building with natural sunlight and greenery space, like an oasis in a concrete city.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
In every corner of the hotel, you will not feel only the building, but the unprecedented warmth and vitality brought by the plants. Keeping the concept that stepping into the hotel is a relaxing vacation, carefully design each place to make people linger and forget to return.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started from July 2022, finished by April 2023 in Tainan, Taiwan. First Debut on May 2023 in NanGang World Trade Center,Taipei.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Taking "natural architecture" as the design concept, the original appearance of a large number of old buildings is preserved, and the space is decorated and integrated into the environment with the lowest consumption materials and in the simplest way. Planting and light are two important elements of natural architecture. Discarded steel bars are used as the branches of the iron tree in the hall. Reuse driftwood or dead wood into furniture. Discarded shrimp and crab cages are reused as lamps.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Research how to integrate local culture and nature into architecture in a highly developed environment, so that architecture is no longer just a building, but a bridge between man and nature.

CHALLENGE:
Original of the site was a hospital that was abandoned for more than three decade and the building was in disrepair, within the building, column structure was quite dense. In order to revive the dilapidated building, how to refresh and reborn this abandoned building to be restore vitality again. Maximizing sunshine and natural breeze to flow into the building, and to create a space for tourist or business travel find an escape in the modern busy city.

This award-winning work is a great example of sustainable design and a perfect balance between modern architecture and nature. The designers have created a unique oasis in the city, using recycled materials and low-consumption materials to bring life and vitality to the abandoned building. This is an inspiring work which demonstrates how design can be used to restore and revitalize a space while also creating a relaxing and inviting atmosphere.
