DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Fibonacci

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Necklace

INSPIRATION:
Spirals are fascinating patterns. And the Fibonacci sequence is one of the most enthralling archetypes. Spirals can be found in a lot of patterns made by nature, eg in sunflowers.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Fibonacci is a necklace made from 750 yellow gold with a bright oval bevelled aquamarine. A slice of a sea snail shell is fixed below the aquamarine. This slice is showing the Fibonacci-pattern.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The colour of the aquamarine resembles the sea. The same is true for the sea snail shell. We wanted to create a pendant which represents a wearable connection to the sea. And due to the pure glance of the stone and the sea snail shells reduction to a spiral, we think, we managed the task.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The necklace Fibonacci was build in June and July 2022 in Langen, near Frankfurt/Main Germany.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
We cut the steel of a sea snail into thin slices, to find that beautiful Fibonacci sequence realised by nature. All the slices were amazing, but one slice resembled the Fibonacci spiral most perfectly. This slice was cast in gold, so it could be soldered under the bezel of the aquamarine and be worn as a part of the necklace.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Specifications: 750 yellow-gold, bright oval bevelled aquamarine. Dimensions necklace 45cm, Dimension pendant: approx. 30 mm and 50 mm high

TAGS:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Leonardo Fibonacci was an outstanding medieval mathematician from Pisa/Italy. He derived mathematic principles from what can be seen in nature. We created jewelry from the inners of a sea snails shell, so that the mathematics can be felt and seen.

CHALLENGE:
Cutting a shell to slices is hard work. Not because of the strength of the material, this is quite soft. But it is hard to find the right angle to slice the snails' shell into proper slices, rectangular to the axis of the shell. But if this is done, the outcome is incredibly rewarding and it is hard to select the loveliest spiral.
