| DESIGN NAME: Magpie PRIMARY FUNCTION: Thermo Jug INSPIRATION: Around the world, almost all birds have been protected. Magpies have been loved by Chinese people since ancient times and are also called as the bird of sending good news, a symbol of good luck. The magpie shape is expected to become a part of the design elements of thermo jug for daily use, which not only narrows the distance to consumers and confers a good wish, but also draws public attention to "harmony between humans and birds" and eases harm to birds. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This magpie thermo jug is intended to arouse the public awareness of environmental protection. With two optional sizes, small size contains up to 0.95L and large size contains up to 1.6L, this series can meet the daily needs of families. Retaining the key components of traditional Chinese aesthetics, this jug looks unique and modernist which is considered as a good fit to modern home. The impressive craft and safe materials coincide with the quality improvement consciousness of this brand. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The spout features the bionic design of beak with a slight upward gesture to prevent water from dripping down the wall of spout when pouring. Soft curves wrapped around the body visually stretch out. In whichever size, user can push the switch and pour water with one hand, and adjust the center of gravity by moving arm, easing the pressure on the wrist and making pouring easier and effortless. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The “Magpie Thermo Jug” project kicked off in Shanghai in December 2020. With efforts made over six months, the project deliverable was presented in July 2021 and made its debut at the China Daily-use Articles Trade Fair in that month. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Food grade body material and glass liner is safe, anti-bacterial and residue-proof. Color options are linked to different moods. The gold bird bears the ornamental value and is more fit to modern home. The food grade body material is safe, anti-bacterial and residue-proof and guards the safety of drinking water. Backed by German insulation liner technology, the lining material is stable and heat-resistant. Coupled with the vacuumizing process, the jug guarantees up to 48 hours of insulation. Color options are linked to different moods, so we designed four color options - white, orange, pink and green. The gold bird appearing on the lid bears the ornamental value which is perceived not boring, but more light-hearted. We thought over how to avoid these pain points and deliver user-friendly experience in the design process. In view of the vital significance of food safety, we examined the material differences between shell and liner and finalized the best solution. CHALLENGE: How to make a trade-off between function and aesthetics is considered the biggest challenge in design. The designer disassembled the spout, body and handle, analyzed these components, conceived and recombined them by function and purpose of use, until a unique look was shaped.
