DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
NFT Marble

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Seating

INSPIRATION:
Nft, the Metaverse. Undoubtedly we have all heard these terms pass by, be it in an article, on tv, an advert. Abstract furniture designed in a way in which it can only exist in a digital world. Having properties or looks that cannot exist in the real world. But what if the roles were reversed? Nft Marble is a series of seating elements created in a context where the look does not match the properties. Solid blocks of white marble, weighing a fraction of their real-life counterparts.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Nft Marble is series of furniture pieces possessing opposite aspects. Whilst looking as if they were chiseled out of a single piece of white marble, nothing could be further from the truth. The abstract pieces are soft to the touch and even flexible. It is as if they were pulled out of a digital world, straight into our reality, a solid piece of marble having properties you could only assign to it in a rendering program.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Nft Marble is a counterpart of its real marble. It looks the same but has complete opposite properties. It's almost as if it defies all that we know regarding the material marble. The bench and stool can be used almost anywhere and can just as well be easily moved to said location. So transport is no problem. The user can decide on his own if the objects are to be used as furniture, display or just as an abstract art piece.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Project took about 4 months to create. Location Belgium, Antwerp.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The furniture can be used inside and outside. Whilst waterproof it also proves to be easily movable. The long bench weighing just 8kg or 17 pounds whilst the small piece could even be picked up by a toddler. Having this leathery, soft, flexible feeling to it, weighing close to nothing. This series is a combination of a new coating technology which transfers details very accurately and is also non-toxic and doesn’t deteriorate or lose its color through the years.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
L1000 x D350 x H450mm,Soft core, Water-resistant coating

TAGS:
Marble, coated, soft, nft

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
It’s always important to keep up to date with newly developed techniques and materials in this branch. Further on also trends are a major aspect to keep an eye on. Taking these newly set trends, materials, production techniques and molding them into a new concept, be it in architecture, design, fashion is what really creates new milestones within our industry. As told previously, the whole concept was to create a series of furniture which brought the Nft format, that digital metaworld into our reality. Seemingly having a normal look, yet defying our perception of how we think that material or element works. The first inspiration came from the rendered utopian interior/exterior settings which have boomed over these last years. Evolving into furniture pieces that were combined with NFT’s. I wanted to do the exact opposite and start by creating a physical NFT, the digital can maybe follow in the future. The difficult part here was not creating a complex shape or form, not only the combination of different materials but to create a very simple looking design that possesses complex properties. Properties you would never assign to the object because of your common knowledge regarding that object/material.

CHALLENGE:
Trying to recreate a chiseled, broken marble effect was the hardest part as the cracks can’t be too small, too big or it gives off a very artificial look. Previous tryouts had a very repetitive texture resulting in a very kitsch look. Perfecting the technique meant that it can be transferred into any desirable size or shape, giving the creative freedom towards an expansion of the series. A lounge, daybed, coffee table.. The process required for this technique is done by hand, so no molds are used. This equals a unique one of a kind furniture piece each time. Having access to a variety of colors further expands that creative freedom.
