DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Per Diem Collection

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Seating

INSPIRATION:
This story starts with 3 basic rules. (1) Make a relatively simple yet comfortable chair (2) with materials that are close to nature or recycled (3) and that looks mature due to its well-thought-out engineering and craftmanship.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Back to simplicity. The aim was to design a comfortable chair with a unique look without the use of high-tech machines. No 7 axis computer-controlled CNC milling machine or 3d printer. And certainly no chemically manufactured stuff or plastics. A stable, robust seating furniture that is technically well designed and elegant. With improved natural and recycled products. The Per Diem chairs are made with standard Birch plywood, cork rubber granulate and a good dose of craftmanship.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
These chairs are for daily use (hence the name Per Diem). Strong, easy to maintain and pleasant due to the ergonomics and the warm upholstery.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The initial idea to design such a chair came at the beginning of 2022. The elaboration of the different models took place in our studio in Ronse (Belgium) and took until the beginning of March 2022.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The various wooden parts are sawn and milled from birch plywood. Then they are assembled with glue and invisible wooden joints. No nails or screws are involved. Finally, the cork rubber elements -cut to size- are glued to the inside of the furniture.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Width 52cm x Depth 62 cm (rocker) x Height 85 cm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The first challenge was to make the chair strong and elegant. The legs in particular deserved extra attention. That is why the sides are sawn in one piece and then an extra leg is attached to it. So half the leg thickness is under the seat and the other half next to the seat, making the whole look less sturdy. The backrest is made of 2 parts that are connected with pin & hole connections. These are given extra strength by the cork rubber inner layer that is glued on. Secondly, the contact layer also needed attention. The cork rubber is a warm to the touch material that is easy to maintain.

CHALLENGE:
Designing is like writing a song. There is always room for an extra note, but does that make the song better? A capella is pretty cool you know.
