INSPIRATION:
Design concept embraces Macau's unique Chinese European culture which penetrates every corner of the restaurant. Interior layout is done to allow an interactive operation. Visitors and staff are free to communicate without barriers. Diners are not only eaters but also audience of the chef's magical culinary skills. The inviting atmosphere is a representation of Macau's culture to welcome tourists from all over the world to experience this world of diversity, colours, food and entertainment.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Macau's unique architectural relics are key design elements. The Interior space is furnished with elements of the cultural heritage of Ruínas de São Paulo, Senado Square, Portuguese style tiles, church stained glass and other vintage materials. All these reveal Macau's unique Chinese-European colonial history.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
It highlights Macau as a hospitable city, design concept incorporates an interactive mode. The fine-dining compartment is an open kitchen bar while the kitchen in the main dining hall is visible through glass panels. So guests are both diners and audience of chefs' culinary skills.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The use of materials is a combination of modern metallic and traditional construction materials. In the dining hall, the pattern of Flagstone Street of Senado Square is reproduced in marble stones. Meanwhile, the epitome of historic Ruínas de São Paulo is recreated in modern metal. Against it is a feature wall built with traditional Portuguese blue-white tiles.

The site area is 594 sq.m.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Research materials come mainly from Macau Government Tourism Office's official website information. Design synchronizes with the government's mission to sustain innovative thinking to introduce Macau's culture to the world and shape the peninsula into a world-class city of tourism and leisure.

CHALLENGE:
Wall in the ‘TATO’ is decorated with wooden pillars to create a relief effect. To achieve sound insulation function, suede material is mounted onto each pillar manually. For best air quality in the open kitchen context, ventilation pipes are set on the pillar. Several drawings are made for production, installation and final visual effect. Achieving ceiling design is another challenge. Aluminum planks of various sizes are made to incorporate amplifiers, lighting systems and complete the pattern.

‘Soda Port’, a synonym of ‘Macao’, offers fine dining in the Legend Palace Hotel located at Macau Fisherman’s Wharf. Just a 10-minute walk from Macau Ferry Terminal, The Wharf is the first theme park in Macau. Since its’ soft opening by the end of 2005, it has become a beloved tourist spot for leisure and themed entertainment in Macau Peninsula. The Soda Port team aspires to fascinate food lovers with the oldest fusion cuisine of Macau. Respectful of tradition yet enthusiast of innovation, it offers a time-lapse experience of exclusive Macau flavors and serves dishes united by traditions and devotion to innovation.

I am in awe of the ingenuity and skill displayed by the creator of ‘Soda Port’. The restaurant interior is an outstanding example of how to create a unique space that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. It is clear to see that this restaurant has been designed with great attention to detail, with the aim of providing the best dining experience possible. Soda Port is an incredible design that celebrates the unique cultural heritage of Macau and is an exemplary example of innovative thinking. Combining modern metallic and traditional construction materials, it perfectly captures the essence of Macau's Chinese-European colonial history with its use of Ruínas de São Paulo, Senado Square, Portuguese style tiles, church stained glass and other vintage materials. Not only does the interior layout allow for an interactive operation that encourages communication between staff and visitors, but the inviting atmosphere is also a representation of Macau's culture that welcomes tourists from all over the world. It is clear that extensive research and dedication has gone into the realization of this work, from the wall reliefs crafted from wooden pillars and suede material to the aluminum planks of various sizes to incorporate amplifiers and lighting systems. Soda Port is a remarkable work that has rightly earned the A' Interior Space and Exhibition Design Award.
