The Aladdin Chaise

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Chaise

INSPIRATION:
Building beautiful things from readily available waste material has always been a passion of ours, and it culminated in this project - one reclaimed rebar rod, and 896 small leftover peels of Aubergine Skin.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Sustainable and Organic, The Aladdin Chaise's frame is constructed from one leftover Rebar Rod, and the Leather is curated from 100% leftover aubergine skin - Curated to be as flexible and resistant as animal leather.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The material created is Amazing; it feels exactly like leather. It can be torn, stretched, manipulated in every way, and it always regains its original texture and look. Very pleasing to feel and experience.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Research into leather creation commenced in 2019, the final approved sample was produced in November 2020. Furniture design from conception to realization took 3 months From Jan to March 2021

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Using Ancient methods of salting and preservation, Food Artist Omar Sartawi was able to create beautiful and sustainable leather using leftover Aubergine skin - Architect Amer Abidi wrapped it up into a floating chaise structure using one rebar rod.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Leather spreads over 280cm x 80cm in 5cmx5cm hand sewn patches - each single aubergine piece telling a story of it own

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
After much thought into the concept realization of creating sustainable (and acceptable) leather from waste material, Food Artist Omar Sartawi went into great lengths in order to curate the material. Endless trials, iteratively improved step by step produced a beautiful final sample which then went into stitching stages - many many stages. In came the architect Amer Abidi with a vision to implement into furniture, the first piece of which being this one The floating Aladdin. Structural rebar cantilever testing provided a direction of many options, this was the outcome of it all! It is beautiful to look at, it susainable, it is organic in nature, and it is something we are very proud of!

CHALLENGE:
Keeping the leather hydrated and finding ways to make it self-sustainable, while remaining chemical-free & organic
