Interview with Luka Krizek at Saturday 26th of April 2014

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
LK: A simple and uncomplicated shapes which create artistic impression. Lightweight and dynamic appearance.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
LK: Make a compact, easily remembered kitchen shape with a distinctive and original design and outstanding functionality. Create kitchen as an icon.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
LK: To offer this type of kitchen design and furniture to potential manufacturers to create a product in commercially available range.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
LK: It took a long time to convince the client and than to deal with technical side of the design. So whole thing from sketch to realization took about half a year.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
LK: I would like to connect with an international furniture manufacturer and design additional furniture pieces to this kitchen.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
LK: I was looking for contrast to historical interior where this kitchen is placed.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
LK: Yes, design of cars.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
LK: A client who likes bold designs and wishes for individual approach.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
LK: It is named after the client surname.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
LK: Imagination, modeling skills and work with materials and in particular convincing skills when working with clients.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
LK: In the long term I'm trying to experiment in the field of architecture and design, but with The intention to create despite the diversity of projects a common style denominator of IO Studio.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
LK: We could not finish this work without a final 3D model created in the computer. And of course it would not work without specialists in corian DCH Sincolor company.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
LK: The subject is manufactured using thermoforming technology. It was therefore necessary to first prepare forms. They are made of MDF using 3D CNC machines.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
LK: No.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
LK: The kitchen island has a 5m length, but with such large object, we had already experience.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
LK: I think that architecture can speak with a universal language and therefore can be understood abroad.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
LK: Every project we propose, we try to do as unique. Therefore, most of applied practice is new for us and we always discover something.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
LK: No, thank you.
