FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SD: My work has been evolving in this direction for a while. I used this technique of streching cloth over bars to make cilindrical pendants for my chandeliers. Doing this I got intrigued by the possibility of creating volumes with cloth streched over one single curved bar. All my recent designs are based on this principle, it gives a sence of simplicity and infinety at the same time.
FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
SD: to start with I am mainly focused on the esthetical value of the form, but the light it gives is as important. In this lamp the lightbulb illuminates the inner surface of the lamp and the space beneath it. It creates islands of light.
FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
SD: It is already produced on a small scale, so it is for sale like it is, but I would be happy to cooperate with other companies and see what is possible.
FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
SD: I have been working on this and similar lamps for years.
FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
SD: It is part of my own collection.
FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
SD: Koziol is working on a model inspired on this one, I am looking for possibilities of cooperation but will also keep producing own work.
FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
SD: I had an idea and tried it out.
FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
SD: One is inspired by the whole world around, but not one particular design or designer.
FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
SD: everybody
FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
SD: The organic way it came into being.
FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
SD: Sa.De are my initials.
FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
SD: Cloth an metal rods.
FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
SD: The cloth is streched over metal bars to its extremes, this natural tension gives the most perfect curves possible, it is as if nature itself would have created them.
FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
SD: I worked with a company (Vari bvba) producing the double mould to reproduce the lamp semi-industrially
FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
SD: Since I wanted to restrict myself to natural materials it was difficult to find the right way to strech the cloth, keep it stabile etc.
FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
SD: I will present my work on Ventura Lambrate in Milan, and thought it was a good oppurtunity to combine it.
FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
SD: Patience and endurance.
