View Larger Image and Additional Photos of Patrick SarranAbout Patrick Sarran : Patrick Sarran is a self-taught designer and an experienced cabinet maker. He also studied engineering. His design process is an ever-evolving combination of 3D CAD, personal prototype workshop and use of digital machines. In June 2007 he founded QUISO, a furniture editing house that sells his creations to gourmet restaurants worldwide. Patrick Sarran enjoys a special relationship with chefs. Like them he creates, manufactures and sells directly to end users, while always striving to be responsive. Patrick Sarran also seeks to support projects and people he cares about. He created the exhibition case for Gilles Azzaro’s art work “The New Industrial Revolution”, presented to President Obama at the first White House Maker Fair in June 2014.
In 1973 I was a 22-year-old student in engineering science. I began to rebel, first against the chemical and nuclear industry and, subsequently, against the ready-made career offered to me. I decided not to follow the easy path and made a complete career change by turning to cabinetmaking. For more than seven years I worked to reproduce ancient styles and learned the basics of the job. In 1979 I broadened my intellectual horizon by spending an exciting year at the post-68 experimental University of Vincennes, a time of great effervescence where I discovered and became familiar with Ettore Sottsass, Philippe Stark, Ron Arad and many others. In the 90s I discovered design methodologies by working with industrial designers and Jean Prouvé became my intellectual mentor. Since then, I have been making furniture in my own style. For the past 42 years, I have observed the evolution of design, techniques, tools and materials. In France when I began work, craftsmen were not appreciated because they were considered ordinary workers. By 2015, craft manufacturers had almost completely disappeared. I am one of the few remaining craftsmen with an in-depth experience of woodworking, able to use the oldest as well as the latest techniques. Now we are at the beginning of a new industrial revolution. Computer-controlled machines are cutting, sculpting and printing plastics, plywood, metals, electronic circuits, etc. Meanwhile, many young designers are struggling to secure their first commissions. Some of them are introduced to new ways of working via FabLabs. Some people think that computers can automatically process the design by precisely tracking the users’ eyes in front of a screen. As a consequence, business plans associated with the designer’s role will change. For me Art is more than this, it still belongs in the province of human creativity. Creating a new design is more than an iterative process. It can pop up suddenly, unpredictably, with no visible rational pattern... It requires both detachment and a thorough knowledge base. My best ideas always come to me in the morning all of a sudden, after fully considering for days and days every aspect of the new product under design. The most beautiful 3D printer is still nature. Working with solid wood and natural materials allows us to retain imperfections, grains and shades, which gives a unique identity to the art work. Metal is back in vogue thanks to new cutting and bending technologies, which can be perfectly assimilated to the wood. In wooden house building, metal connectors are replacing mortises and tenons. Tomorrow, metal 3D printing will become affordable for manufacturing complex hinges and locks. Structural adhesives have appeared, offering new formal possibilities. Design becomes very precise using 3D software programs. You can see exactly what you will get. You can work in real time with different scales, taking into account various aspects such as weight, material economy, resistance and human interaction. Virtual models help to precisely draw plans that can be easily shared with manufacturers. Further, they make it possible to avoid errors when different pieces of a plan are sent out to different manufacturers. Design and manufacture are linked. Internet offers higher accessibility to small-scale but skilled and well-trained producers. I believe that in both France and Europe, there is a high level of expertise, a culture of arts and crafts and a tradition of design to which I belong.
