| DESIGN NAME: Kurio PRIMARY FUNCTION: Modular Shelfing System INSPIRATION: The basic idea is inspired by the Cabinets Of Curiosities (hence the name Kurio) of the late renaissance. These wooden cabinets were shelfing systems with various boxes of different sizes, to hold objects of wonder from all around the world and juxtapose them in intriguing arrangements. These and similar concepts of showcases of the 70s and 80s were fixed in their design. Kurio in comparison is a modular system and can be changed and re-arranged with ease. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Kurio is a unique and versatile shelf-board system with a regular grid of slits holding elegant thin aluminium panels. These panels can be placed in any order and interconnect when tucked together vertically and horizontally. This system does not require any screws or tools and allows for an instant change of the layout. Board and panels are available in various colours and sizes giving the freedom to create various looks. Kurio can be expanded by interconnection with any other Kurio. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The aluminium panels should first be placed horizontally. These can hold the vertical panels when tucked together and will together form a stable system. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2018 and the first prototype was shown at Blickfang Vienna. It was finished in January 2019. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: CNC cut Aluminium panels, anodised. Coloured MDF board with milled 2mm slits. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Current model: Board 500 x 15 x 800 Panels 400 x 80, 300 x 80 and 200 x 80 Slit depth 12mm Different sizes will follow and allow for even more flexibility TAGS: Shelf, modular, modularity, flexible design, type case, display, showcase, adaptability, wall mounted, home and living, home accessories RESEARCH ABSTRACT: After the idea for Kurio came about I started to search the marketplace for similar shelfing systems which allowed a modular set up. To my surprise I couldn’t find many modular systems at all, and these appeared rather stiff and complicated. Particularly the field of smaller decorative shelves was not massively covered and especially lacking ideas for individual set ups. After this investigation I felt strengthened to realise Kurio as an easy to use and instantly modular shelfing system that feels modern and sophisticated.
