DESIGN NAME:
Brasilia Chair

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Chair

INSPIRATION:
When we think about the shape of a chair, it is normal to visualize complex ergonomic and geometric shapes that usually depend on sophisticated industrial process to be produced. However, we remember little or nothing about the initial state of the raw material, the wood solid pieces that originated the object. The Brasilia chair tries to remember the material condition, the visual weight of the raw lumber, and the primary characteristics of the wood blocks that will disappear in the productive process, transformed into sophisticated objects.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
At first sight, the Brasilia chair is only the diagram of a simple chair and the way anyone would represent one without giving much attention to the details. Feet, seat and backrest compose a set of pieces organized within a rigorous orthogonal system. Not satisfied with this diagrammatic condition, the wood is carved until presenting the attribute that is required from a chair besides beauty: comfort. Hence, transiting between the abstraction and the ergonomics, the gentle curves of the Brasilia chair reflect the purpose of the object in a geometric composition of straight angles and seemingly simple shapes.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Deprived of repose for the forearm, Brasilia is a chair that materializes the diagram of the basic act of sitting. Given its straight angles and frugality of shapes, this chair can be appreciated arranged in many scenarios, such as a dinner room, a high cuisine restaurant or a simple coffee shop.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The chair was designed in 2013 in Brasilia. The production phase, also in Brasilia, started and finished throughout 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Brasilia is a solid wood chair manufactured using a CNC Router technology. The prototype presented in the photos was made by tropical uncut lumber of 500 x 500 x 50 mm. The product aimed for sale will be composed of solid wood planks glued with laths of different width and fiber orientation with a better adaptation to the geometry, reducing machining time and material waste. Regarding the structural behavior, the thickening of the wood in the joint of the chair (5 cm width) helps to dissipate the structural straining, especially of the backrest and the back feet.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Solid Wood Chair Dimensions Width 470mm x Depth 470 x Height 800mm Surface treatment with matte PU painting system.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The research conducted was divided in two phases, an in depth theoretical search on the available literature with references to chairs of similar characteristics and the conduction of a prototype, testing different constructive solutions and different types of wood. During the production of the prototypes, our main goal was defining the methodology of the industrial scale production, knowing that the tools available in the elaboration of the prototype would not necessarily be applied in the serial production. Several partial prototypes of the different pieces that compose the chair were made up to the production of two finished chairs, testing the best orientation of the wood fiber for both resistance and aesthetics. We also tested the prototype made out of solid wood without the machining process. This was a conceptual model with the raw material in its original state, which served to contemplate the proportions that the chair would have. The pieces were machined in a conventional CNC Router with low torque Spindle, due to the difficulties to find high performance machining services specialized in wood in the local region. After the finalization of the prototype process, we reached the conclusion that the manufacture in great scale is only viable in a line of production with 5 axis machining equipment, a technology widely used by manufactures of chairs these days.

CHALLENGE:
After a short documentation preparation phase, we faced a long journey looking for machining services, which last a few years with some interruptions. The difficulties were due to the fact that we had a hard time looking for a company willing to work throughout the challenges of the design and the lack of local machining companies specialized in woodwork. Since the beginning, we ruled out the investment in expensive machines during the prototype phase, which was the right call, given that today we are able to define the proper equipment to invest on. The registry process at the National Institute of Intellectual Property of Brazil also took another year to be approved. Despite the delays and budgetary restrictions, we took the opportunity to learn with experienced woodworkers the best solutions for the chair. With the projects 3D detailing, it is possible to test the different possibilities of assembling and constructive solutions before starting to prototype the piece.

NAME:
Scheel Architect

PROFILE:
Scheel Architect is an architecture and design studio with its production characterized by the emphasis on the comprehension of the constructive and production techniques, on the materials and on the practical involvement in the execution of the projects, regardless the scale and purpose of the object. The creation methodology emerges freely in the path that links abstract and concrete thinking, which represents the understanding of the material production’s necessities. Scheel opened its doors in 2013 and has been working for a variety of clients from the private sector with both, architecture project and construction works execution. Currently, besides the activities already mentioned, it is developing the first fully manufactured prototype of a house, using the techniques of modular construction. The prototype will start to be built on March 2019.
