| DESIGN NAME: Two Forever PRIMARY FUNCTION: Jewellery INSPIRATION: Wedding sets are a well-known concept in the US, where the big diamond engagement ring is paired with a smaller wedding ring, which fits up against the latter. A smart solution in order to have more space for rings on the other fingers. However, the wedding ring tends to turn autonomously around the finger even though it has often been designed to follow the specific shape of the engagement ring - to much irritation of the wearer. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Wedding set with two interlinked rings, keeping each other in place. The comfortable solitaire “Hiding Heart” reveals its namesake design detail when seen from the side. The curved “Hooked on You” wedding band is slipped up and over the setting of the solitaire and therefore the two rings do not, like on most other wedding sets, move autonomously. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The rings pose a little puzzle when put together, since one ring is simply hooked over the other before putting them on the finger. There they are held together by the finger going through them while the curve of "Hooked on You", hooked around the "Hiding Heart" stone setting makes sure they stay in place. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in the spring of 2016 and was presented to the public in november 2017. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Countless sketches by hand, 3D drawing and test prints went before the first prototypes were cast and set. In spite of the 3D technique being very precise, adjustments by hand at the jewelers bench were still necessary before the rings were deemed good enough as a prototype for mould making. We have designed the Hiding Heart rings with 3 different dimensions of settings and the Hooked on you both as a simple, rounded version as well as prepared for gems being set in a row. Intended materials: gold & diamonds. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Hiding Heart sizes: Big is for 6mm stone (apr. 0,9ct) Medium is for 5 mm stone (apr 0,5 ct) Small is for 4 mm stone (apr. 0,25 ct) Hooked on You is created for 0,02ct diamonds The rings are created in silver (up until 0,25ct), gold and rhodium plated white gold. TAGS: Wedding sets, engagement ring, wedding ring, heart, durability, comfort, two rings in one RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We see many old rings with prong or claw settings which are worn down by daily use. When designing our new engagement ring, we strove to create a design, which was more sturdy while still allowing light to flow through the gem. The Hiding Heart combines the best from the claw setting with the upsides of the closed setting. Through countless sketches, 3D images as well as 3D prints, we were able to create a wedding set, which for once staid in place, allowed the maximum brilliance of the diamond and will be able to withstand many more years of wear and tear. CHALLENGE: Making two rings fit perfectly togetter, in order to appear as one ring, while still being durable and comfortable took a lot of testing, adjusting and redesigning. Having the oppertunity to 3D print models instead of having to build the ring in metal, over and over for every little adjustment, helped immensly in the design process. However old fashioned work at the jewellers bench was still paramount in order for finising the rings. NAME: Castens PROFILE: Castens is a small Danish jewellery brand which has specialized in bespoke jewellery with a soft and somewhat outer-worldly look to it. The inspiration for the jewellery, designed by owner and jeweller Karin Castens, is largely found in nature and French art nouveau, but with a distinct modern feel to the abstract, undulating designs. Unlike the Hiding Heart rings, many pieces of jewellery from the hands of Karin Castens alternate between coarse, contemporary surfaces and polished areas, creating contrast and depth to the designs. A version of the Hiding Heart with just such a surface is currently under way. The studio-shop is located in the historical part of Copenhagen, behind the Royal Theatre and next to the (in-)famous Nyhavn. Here Karin Castens and her crew create primarily one of a kind pieces, but also a few, select collections such as “Rocaille”, inspired by a motif from the Rococo period or “Adorabella”, which features a grand, convertible tiara made of white gold, diamonds and Tahiti pearls. The customers of Castens seek jewellery which emphasizes their individuality and hence one-of-a-kind designs as well as custom versions of collections is what is mostly created in the cosy workshop. Often a piece is linked to a certain event or memory in the life of the client, featuring a certain motif or perhaps even by using old gold linked to a certain person. |
