DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Dab

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Ecg holter patch

INSPIRATION:
The results of a medical examination depends not only on accurate measure but also on ordinary user behavior. Most of the patients behaves differently under Ecg holtering, which leads to non-accurate diagnosis. There are many reasons causing this change in the behavior, some of them is practical, which could be easily improved, but some of them is emotional. Existing solutions are mainly improving technology, not the user experience as the design of Dab.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Dab is an unobtrusive Ecg holter patch combining recent holtering technology with it's users behavior in focus. Dab is aimed to minimize medical instrument size by reducing electrode distances. It is recording data with permanent high-quality dry electrodes. The redesigned way of applying the sensor onto the body makes it effortless and intuitive. Thanks to these changes we can achieve better user experience, while significantly reducing disposable items, manufacturing and maintenance costs.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Instead of the regular disposable solutions, Dab has the electrodes integrated in its body. Thanks to the newest researches aiming to reduce the size of body sensors proved the possibility of halve the interelectrode distance. Applying the sensor onto the body is a quick and durable solution thanks to the unique design and material selection. As Dab is using dry electrodes instead of complex disposable ones. The sensor is Bluetooth connected to a smartphone and all data stored in the Dab cloud.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project starter in May 2017 and finished in September 2017, granted by the Laszlo Moholy-Nagy Design Grant in Budapest, Hungary.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Dab has 2 main element, the sensor itself and the patch. The sensor is an injection molded ABS plastic, with a high quality silver-alloy dry electrodes insert molded. Thanks to the simple and functional design, the manufacturing of the housing is not more difficult or costly than a PET bottle cap. The second element is the patch. I tested around 30 different materials used in medication as a bandage, to find the most suitable in terms of durability, manufacturing cost and user experience. There is 2 proposal for the patch: high quality silicon and a textile version (used in kinesio tapes) depends on the activity of the user.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The sensor is 38 mm x 36 mm x 8 mm, and the patch is 70 mm x 70 mm x 0.8 mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
I started the process with Design Thinking workshop with doctors, patients and designers. Online and personal questionnaire was also done with nearly 70 participants, and I consulted with cardiologists in Germany and Hungary. I tested around 30 materials to find the most suitable and performed prototype testing in 3 age ranges both men and women with different skin conditions. Electric conductivity between the skin and electrodes were simulated with a built physical prototype.

CHALLENGE:
Finding the right patch material was the most challenging, and testing them on different skin condition while also keeping manufacturing and cost factors in mind.
