DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
PIXIO

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Packing

INSPIRATION:
Inspired by pixel art style of the magnetic constructor PIXIO, its creators wanted to develop a packaging that would bear the same simplicity and elegance. The goal was to demonstrate product’s concept of a 3D pixel as a perfect shape for creative construction.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
PIXIO packaging concept visually communicates the product’s key feature - the versatility of a cube in pixel art style. The packaging box is just like pixio-block itself. With colored sides and ideal cubic shape, it extends the brand’s idea of creative construction with endless possibilities. When stacked the boxes may be formed into patterns, words, statues, and images, making the shelf speak to a customer in a funny appealing way.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The sides of PIXIO boxes repeat the color palette and matte surface of pixio-blocks. This allows to create unique on-shelf messages and fun visual art in the store's space, thus bringing customers into play. A lovely gamification trigger activates a creator that’s inside of everyone. Any store visitor who hasn’t made a purchase yet but who takes a box from the shelf and puts it back - gets engaged in pixel art game experience already.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project was started in Atlanta, GA and was funded on Kickstarter during spring 2017. In February 2018 PIXIO was exhibited in Toy Fair in Nuremberg Spielwarenmesse.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
This design concept has been implemented for PIXIO sets using high-quality matte coated paperboard. The inside peculiarities of the box construction are double-layered walls and lodgment for pixio-blocks to achieve nice view during unpacking and to guarantee safety during logistic.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The packaging dimensions are 8 x 8 x 8 cm, made of paperboard. The concept applies to PIXIO-50, PIXIO-100 and PIXIO-200 set. Other sets are 16 x 16 x 8 cm and 24 x 24 x 8. All dimensions are scaled by 8 that has reference to a digital background and 8-bit culture.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Main research activities were focused on in-stores design and pixel art idea. What sizes are ideal for different retailers, what colors attract costumers–were main investigations. Creating a base of simple but working images that can be created in stores field. The packaging has been created in the way that allows to play even before purchasing a product. PIXIO-boxes are changing the opinion about a simple packaging and helps to become an additional stylish visual element in retail marketing. Huge attention was paid to unboxing experience, wich is based not only on designer’s imagination but on focus groups results. They clearly show a wonderful experience, curiosity, and delight from the scrutiny of new proper product.

CHALLENGE:
The main challenge was to create a simple attractive package that shows a concept of the product. The perfect balance for colors on the sides of the package has been found. To have an opportunity to create on-shelf in stores without additional POS materials. An additional challenge was to create inner part and lodgment that combines 4 functions at one time: 1) Affect product safety. 2) Create product presentation during unboxing experience. 3) Assure all line of SKU in the same package dimensions. 4) Ability to be attractive to a child and for adults.
