| DESIGN NAME: Buzao - Qie PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pendant light INSPIRATION: The 'Buzao' series is a project we want to present to the people who are passionate toward life and would like to accept something new. 'Buzao' means 'I don't know' in mandarin but literally means 'to not overwork'. We believe that there is no actual creation but only changes - so called 'creating' is actually changing something familiar into an unfamiliar way that we had not experienced before. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A simple and clear integrated design of pendant light made from volcanic rock. One version of the Qie pendant light uses a metallic end, makes the contradiction of colors and textures between volcanic rock and metallic surface is fascinating. Insulating stone material makes it safe from occurrence of electric shock and the rock itself is so durable that you might not have to get a new one anymore. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The natural texture on volcanic rock is a great decoration when accompanied with polished metal surface. The eye-catching contradiction is kind of interesting from our perspectives. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design is initially released in 2012, but the version of volcanic rock is developed in 2017. Not yet exhibited. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The beginning of the idea of this product was a trip we went to Teng Chong, a town near to a volcano. The entire town applied only one kind of stylishly porous stone to make bricks, floor tiles and so on. We felt in love with the rock and later realized that most volcanic rocks that is not too large in size were regarded as 'wastes', which made us wanted to reuse it as a cool material we could apply on our products. As we wanted to reduce waste, we tried reusing the leftover material to make small items including ‘Qie’. Qie does not need any decoration as its unique texture of volcanic rock surface has provided enough decoration. Simple geometric shapes guarantees a certain degree of compressive resistance and thus decreases the rate of spoiled products. It is commonly seen that there are tons of leftover material and off-cut produced during processing which reflects overcapacity of volcanic rock and resource waste. As we wanted to reduce wastes, we tried reusing the leftover material to make small items or just directly put it into use. CHALLENGE: The volcanic rock as a material is quite brittle and it was a challenge to carve on the volcanic rock to make an empty space for electronic components to install later. NAME: GUANGZHOU BENTU CULTURE AND DEVELOPMENT CO LTD PROFILE: Bentu is an independent design brand founded in 2011, engaged in innovative designing and combined designing with manufacturing. They're actually an exploration team and also a laboratory. they made products on their own to satisfy their necessary or extemporaneous needs, step by step from initial designing to final polishing. Through a series of experiments and exploration, they found the primeval feature of materials amazingly beautiful by revealing the original texture and temperament. What hides behind their attempt is their equal care for all - all the raw materials, techniques and cultures that make up things. There is no disparity between nobleness and lowliness, costliness and cheapness, neither treasures and trashes. Devoting ourselves into design could make the mud as priceless as the diamond. Even a straw or a handful of mud would shine when they find their uses. There is not the best but only the fittest thing for any purpose. they cherish everything they asked from the world. Bentu focuses on the R&D, design, production and sales and promotion of products which varies from lighting, home furnishing, outdoor furniture, wall decors and so on. None of these is below of international standard. Most of their products are already certified to CCC、CE, ROHS2.0, SAA, C-TICK, FCC and IC. they have their own IPR and own more than 200 patents. |
