| DESIGN NAME: Verso PRIMARY FUNCTION: Salad servers INSPIRATION: Sculptural Verso salad servers reflect the inner growth, stimulated by dining pleasures and art experiences, which always develops into something new and inspiring. Inspiration for the design came from the local nature, when trees start to sprout a new branches. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Verso salad servers were designed for the design competition organized by Serlachius Museums and Mänttä Craft’s Center in Finland. Salad servers were chosen as a winner and they became items of merchandise for the museum shop. Verso salad servers combine the fine crafts, wood producing possibilitys and recognizable design in unique way. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When the end user get salad servers in the hands. First they separate pair taking the label away. From the label can found the details of Verso. End user is in touch with very fine maple wood surface. Because of quality craftsmanship the final surface is very comfort, natural and joy for eye. After using, the pair can be washed with water but not in dishwasher. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in beginning of 2016 for participating in design competition organized by Serlachius Museums and Mänttä Craft’s Center. Designing and prototyping made in Fiskars village, Finland. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Made by combining the cnc-milling and hand finishing. The pair of salad servers is milled from one maple wood piece. After that band sawed the forms and finally sanding by hands. Water treated before the final touch. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 310mm x Depth 40mm x Height 35mm. There is no package only a product label which is also connecting the pair of salad servers together. TAGS: Salad servers, wood design, Serlachius Museums, food, contemporary design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Beginning of the designing process tried to search all kind of wooden objects to see how the details work in functional product. The desire to bring out the diverse possibilities of wood is a recurring theme in my works so because of this I made lot of practical experiments to find out righteous way to use the material and also testing with 3D program and cnc-milling. When in question was participating in design competition I search knowledge from the organizer Serlachius Museums which is one of the largest museum attractions in Finland. CHALLENGE: Challenge was to keep the design very clean and simple but on the same time show enough details from the form. Also the balance with form and functionality took some time. NAME: Serlachius Museums PROFILE: Amid the exquisite beauty of Finnish Lakeland lies one of Finland’s most prominent museum complexes, Serlachius Museums, offering memorable experiences to lovers of art, history, good food and nature: Two museums, three museum buildings. Several exhibitions: big names in contemporary art, masters of the Finnish Golden Age art, a dramatised history of the early days of the paper industry. Gösta’s sculpture garden. Taavetinsaari Island. Two museum shops. Restaurant Gösta’s pristine flavours. Bicycles, Nordic walking poles and rowing boats to borrow. The two museums are maintained by Gösta Serlachius Fine Arts Foundation. Its collection is one of the largest private art collections in Scandinavia.
