DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Cwic

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Toy

INSPIRATION:
My wife and I were inspired by the trees in our garden and the different colors every season, we wanted to create a tree that could both guide us through All the Seasons, and could be used to understand the cycle of life.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Cwic, is the All-Seasons Tree. We have combined design, interaction, nature, and fun in a very didactic toy. With our tree you can represent all the seasons using your imagination mixing the different pieces, colors that represent the foliage. Cwic is made of beech wood hand-painted and the packaging is a box that represents a flowerpot made of solid wood.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
After opening this beautiful carved wood box held together by magnets , you find our tree trunk and its 50 round pieces of varying colors. All the pieces have embossed magnets. Use your imagination to stack the different circles of the trunk tree, and then recreate the four the seasons of the year. You can present small flowers flourishing in spring or green leaves turning orange or snow covering everything.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in February 2015 in Segovia (Spain). It finished in September 2015 in Segovia (Spain) and was exhibited in La Maison and Objet in Paris in September 2015

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Toys, Games and Hobby Products Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
First we make our ideas come to live by designing it on paper, drawing it, writing it and brainstorming it. Then we redesign using 3D software to verify technical issues. Then we translate it into CAM software so that a CNC machine can drill it from the beech wood board that has already been cut, planned and sanded. And in then the colored pieces are painted. We then separate the pieces from the board by sanding them down and hand sanding them further for a smooth finish. The magnets are inserted into the wood by pressure.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Trunk tree: width 155 mm x depth 20 mm x height 195 mm Solid wood beech box: width 250 mm x depth 60 mm x height 235 mm Total weight: 1700 gr

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We continue researching visiting cities where wooden toys are a market trend , we research also online any information we could find about wooden toys, and we've read books about how to work with wood, design.... We still believe there is a a gap between toys and design, for us instead design is a must.

CHALLENGE:
Design challenges: The most difficult part was to decide how to make the box, we had a clear vision of the tree from the beginning, but it was hard to find a minimalistic design of a flower pot with the pieces inside. We still found the same production challenge: use CNC machinery to produce in Europe; having to invent non-existing mechanisms and processes; in Spain is really expensive and difficult to start a company moreover a factory.

CLIENT/STUDIO/BRAND DETAILS
NAME:
Wodibow

PROFILE:
The company was born under the premises of combining nature and design. At wodibow they believe that toys can have high doses of design and be 100% natural at the same time. Since they design and produce in Spain, they can double-check every one of the pieces that they put in the market. They can supervise every step of the production process. Besides, they believe that one of their production pillars is having invested in buying high technology (CNC machinery) to achieve a high level of quality. Their way of doing is "maker philosophy" like. At wodibow, they don’t rely on plastics at all nor in any product that are not environment friendly. That is why they use 100% natural products that don’t contain anything that could pollute the planet, people, or animals. They commit to never use plastic. And if they ever use paint or glue it shall be non-polluting.
