DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Origami Ark

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Show room

INSPIRATION:
Since Sansho Clients visit both the nearby factory and the showroom it self, we wanted to keep a certain unity by using display fixture similar to the one used for the production in the factory. We used then four types of units to create the exposition space in the inside. The outside of the building was inspired by traditional Japanese art of Origami making, and conjugated with the high speed of Shinkansen trains passing in front of the building.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Spaceship, the Ark or just Sunsho showroom is a fusion of a futuristic exterior appearance and a 1000 year old traditional industry interior exhibition. This Leather product’s showroom responds to two requests: expose more than 3000 leather items, and impress the visitor by the overwhelming variety of products. The design uses a huge three dimensional maze composed by 83 metallic display units. The units are assorted into four types, each has a specific function.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
In order to create the surprise the surprise effect toward the variety of leather materials, the showroom uses a 3 dimensional fixture in a single exposition space. This 3D fixture is made of four types of units: The hanger type, the shelf type, the table type, and the drawer type. Each of them has a specific use and can host various numbers of leather items. The units are connected with each other irregularly creating a maze and providing an exploring experience similar to that in a jungle gym.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Project duration: Beginning of design: December 2013. End of Design: August 2014. Beginning of construction: September 2014. End of construction: April 2015. Open to business: 21st April 2015. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The Exterior shape uses metallic structure to keep the budget as low as possible, but provides also possibility of producing the sharp angled walls. As for the inside, 100 x 100 mm2 metallic frame was used to build the three dimensional maze functioning as a display fixture and in contrast the OCB wood panels covering the building walls from inside provides a warmer welcoming feeling.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Dimensions: 33300 x 14370 x 7600 mm3 Built area: 430 m2 Structure type: metallic structure Materials: metallic profiles + OSB panels

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The research conducted in this project was purely spatial. We were aiming to find the most effective and profitable way of using a narrow space both to exhibit a maximum of items and to provide a unique experience to the visitor. We used a multitude of sketches until we found the perfect dimensioning of our units, as display fixtures, then we proceeded to several experiments of unit disposition. The result of several units imbrication induced a final shape of a maze.

CHALLENGE:
Two challenges were encountered during the design process. The first was to respect the very small budget of construction; hence the choice of materials, structure and dispositions was problematic, especially when it came to the creation of the sharp angled wall. The second challenge was the restricted space area. How to confine the necessary number of units inside the narrow volume, and yet provide enough natural light, inside perspectives, and create a flowing route?
