DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Breaking Time

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Spatial design and communication

INSPIRATION:
The key messages in the room are depicted by: the bird (meaning freedom), the cave (meaning refuge away... from busy times), dark colours and soft lights (meaning to relax). The main installation of the room to represent "the cave" has been inspired by Wellington waterfront waka house roof. Designed by Wellington firm Architecture+ the roof is intended to evoke a Maori cloak, but when I looked at it upside-down, I simply saw the rigid and sharpened shape of a ceiling into a cave. New Zealand is the country of birds and they are really precious for locals. Living here has teach me more about these beautiful animals and the infinite meanings we gave to them. My design is a praise to live freely as birds do.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Architecture and interior design are not just about maths, materials and positioning, They are also about feeling and meaning. I decided to transform a monotone room of my house, the lounge, with design and new applications which could transmit in a better way the feeling and the humour of the room itself. A sanctuary away from the busyness of time and the external world. A place to relax, think and create.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The feeling of entering the room has completely changed. The form of the structure evokes a feeling of being embraced or protected from the outside world as being in a cave. The bird designed on the wall has an energetic presence in perfect contrast and balance with the lighting of the room which can create different intensity of luminosity depending from the needs.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Project is located in Wellington, New Zealand. Started in May 2015 and finished in July 2015, it's part of a personal research and development to improve the quality of my own house.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Project is composed by three different sections. The freedom represented by the design of a bird, has been printed on HP wallpaper and completed with the installation of a metal nest realised with iron and brass. The ceiling structure, which represent an abstract modern ceiling of a cave, has been released with MDF panels, 220 metres of pine sticks, more than 3500 screws and LED strips. The third part of the project is the light "recharge", which has been released with aluminium and LED lights.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Wallpaper dimensions: w:200 x h:300 cm Ceiling structure dimensions: w:130 x l:500 x h:60 cm Recharge light dimensions: l:130 x h:30 x w:10 cm

TAGS:
time, wallpaper, geometric, ceiling, design, room, wood, metal, lighting, spatial

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
I'm not a builder and neither an architect so has been really important for me research and understand how technically to build something hanging from the ceiling. Has been really helpful making models in scale of the project to understand the process and improve the structure.

CHALLENGE:
The real challenge was to create a different look and feel of the room with a small budget of just $1,500. To do this I dedicated hours making models of the ceiling structure to find the best visual result with the minor waste of material. Has been technically hard to find the esthetic precision I was looking for. I wanted a symbolic representation of a cave in perfect contrast with a geometric rhythm of materials to create something that it could be recognised as an artistic element rather than a messy bunch of stuff.
