DESIGN NAME:
Hotel de Rougemont

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Hotel, Residences, SPA

INSPIRATION:
The project was inspired by the concept of the standard room. Its size was given, so we had to develop an idea that could make the most out of it. We imagined the room as a wooden box opened on a side to the exterior landscape; we placed a glass cube, the shower box, in the middle of the space: its presence would have started a series of multiple reflections, a link between the indoor and the outdoor environment. This will allow the stay in the room to become an inspirational experience of authenticity.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The interior design of the Hotel de Rougemont had to find a common ground between the traditional Swiss chalet style and the glamorous appeal of the world famous ski resort of Gstaad. Inspired from the surrounding nature and from the local architecture, the interiors provide a harmonious combination of old and new, combining local materials and traditional craftsmanship with innovative design solutions and creative decor, in a style that blends timeless elegance and modern luxury.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The interiors had to reflect the spirit of the place, while offering something new and up to date in order to meet the needs and expectations of today’s travelers. Our goal was to convey a discreet sense of luxury combined with the friendly atmosphere of Alpine hospitality. We’ve tried to enhance the connection between the interior space and the landscape outside, high standard comforts and facilities ,combined with local natural materials, maximize the sense of well being of a regenerating holiday in the mountains.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in October 2011 and ended in December 2014. The hotel was an existing building, a new annex for the Residences has been built and new areas have been added to the Hotel.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The walls are coated with reclaimed lumber from local dismantled farmhouses (Boiserie en lames de vieux bois de sapin), flush joints provide a more contemporary feel. Rough-textured wall finishes (Calce del Brenta) and stone surfaces (Nero Assoluto, Pietra di Corinto) break the uniformity of wood and relate to the rough surfaces of the mountains; glass mirrored surfaces (Antelio bronze) add lightness and transparency and recall the closeness to the sky and to the water of the Alpine lakes and rivers.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The Hotel is composed of: 12 Standard rooms,13 Suites et 8 Juniors suites, Hall, Lounge bar, Restaurant , Wineroom, Cigar lounge, Boutique, Spa (Pool, Fitness, Hammam, Sauna, Massage rooms) Conference Rooms, Brainstorming room

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We examined many styles of contemporary chalet interiors and studied the traditional elements of local architecture, then we defined our own personal vision. The materials had to enhance the concept of authenticity, with a large use of wood and stone as in the local tradition. Large portions of walls and ceilings have been covered in reclaimed timber from old Swiss chalets, but their setting has been reinvented to improve the perception of space and the general harmony.

CHALLENGE:
The Hotel rooms were existing units of a quite small size. We had to fit our concept to the limited height of these spaces. So we had to find solutions that could improve the perception of the space itself. We conceived each room as a unit, each one with different features. The 33 rooms have different interior layouts, the design has been customized to increase the sense of space and uniqueness and to maximize the sense of well-being and the sense of harmony one receives from the surrounding nature.
