DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Familiar and Unfamiliar

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Moving objects with clockwork mechanism

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration mainly comes from the memories of daily objects during my childhood. We cherish old objects as our close friends, because sometimes they could recall us the old times of ourselves. However, we are now living in an era that our world has been changing rapidly by technology. Because of the development of technology, a period of mass production occurs. We are surrounded by thousands of fast-food products, our values as well as perceptions become “fast-food”. Consequently, the modern society is a familiar but unfamiliar world to us. Through this design oriented programme “Familiar and Unfamiliar”, I intend to explore the true meanings of daily objects in our everyday lives and the true meaning of life itself.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
I believe that objects have lives and souls. “A clockwork world”, it is a dramatic way of recreating the daily objects in our memories. If our using objects could move, react in an unexpected way and even become alive through our actions, how shall we identify them again and how shall we identify functionalities? The objects have personalities by the users, and conversely the personalities of users are reflected by the objects. Both of the two affect each other closely. It is a dramatic and humorous furniture design collection. All of the objects have clockwork equipments which makes them familiar but unfamiliar; impossible in daily lives but lifelike in a fairytale dream or memory. Interestingly, the unpredictable movements of the objects are controlled by an iconic element—a key of clockwork device. Consequently, the interaction between conscious action and unexpected results brings a brand new recognition of objects which we have known just partly before.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Each of the objects (furniture) has a key of the clockwork mechanism. When rotating the keys, the objects will move in an unexpected way. Consequently, people provide personalities to objects and the objects respond us back in a way.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in June 2014 and finished in September 2014 in London, and was exhibited in London Design Festival 2014.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Fine Arts and Art Installation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The objects (furniture) of this project are handmade in the workshop of Goldsmiths and exhibited in London Design Festival 2014. The making process contains varies of materials and techniques. From metal manufecture to woodmaking; from electric mechanism to silicone injection.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
It is a experimental design project by using both theoretical methodology and practical skills. In the first step I combined my core concept with some theories such as The Tool-being by Heidegger and The Mirror Stage by Lacan. And then the research was mainly about the relationship between user and daily objects. On the stage of making, there were several researches about the structures of objects as well as the large sized clockwork mechanism. I used both 2D and 3D applications to help me visualized the design concept. And lastly, by the help of the technician, I used CNC, laser cutter, woodworking machines as well as 3D printer to make all the objects of project by myself.

CHALLENGE:
The difficulties about how to make the imaginative objects real, how to make large sized clockwork mechanism and how to make them move in an unexpected way.
