Decor Photoinstallation by Johanna Mårtensson

Home > Winners > #28463

DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Decor

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Photoinstallation

INSPIRATION:
I was inspired by an article about how well the earth would do without us. Within 500 years all buildings would be half fallen or fallen, perfect homes for animals and plants. The forrest would soon grow in cities. After hand buildings aswell as pollutions would be taken care of by bacterias and micro-organisms. An ufo that came here in a couple of of hundred thousand years would not see many signs of that a gang of primates ones thought that they where the lords of the planet.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
In a model building I wanted to give thoughts around the reality, that we consider ours and look at it as a scenography to an imagined scenario. A scenario by nature occasional and perishable. What is behind it or what will happen when the decor moulds might not be a coming apocalypse but the creation of a new process. Not without humor I wanted to give another picture of what might happen when the show is over.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
It is a photoinstallation, to be viewed.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
I built the cityscape in 2009, Stockholm, it took about 8 month to realize, and was exhibited at Liljevalchs Varsalong, Stockholm 2010 and at the 1650 gallery in Los Angeles 2011.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Arts, Crafts and Ready-Made Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
I created a a city scape with modell houses that I made out of bread. I let it stand for 6 month and photographed it every day. The photographs shows the molding process.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
A serie of six photographs, each print Width 500 mm Hight 400 mm.

TAGS:
micro-organisms, science fiction, decor, revival, mould, architecture

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
It is a part of a series of realized and not realized ideas, that has a very abstract and diverse research field such as micro-organisms, sci-fi movies, architecture and more. It is a small section of a big dream of making an alternative optimistic sci-fi movie. Practically I did spend a lot of time on testing how different materials and food breaks down.

CHALLENGE:
The hardest bit of the realization of the piece was the smell.
