DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Baboor Dawar Line

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Table

INSPIRATION:
I had two influential aspects, first, deriving from rich historical or folkloric heritages and the concept that every item in our lives even an outdated kitchen appliance can have beauty in it if seen from an art seeking eye which makes the prospects countless.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The use of colored glass for the table top as an indication to the old steel mesh purposed for cooking ,has imitated the functionality with a material that is both operational and does not obstruct perceiving the meticulous details of the table. This piece despite the fact that it is a sculptured hand crafted wooden replica of an extinct household appliance yet alterations made to its design, dimensions, proportions and materials used whether in manufacturing or finishing has subtly transcended it into an Avant-Guard item that is not only astounding but also clicks as a historical utensil in our memory and revives nostalgic emotion of culture and folklore while maintaining a bridge of familiarity with its modern twist to items used and seen in the present.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
-

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The concept of the piece initiated in November 2010, the progression of the design was in several phases till February 2011 before production started. Several trials have been executed in the study of proportions and materials in the process to evolve to its final form in August 2011, where it had been introduced to the market. The body of the table was crafted manually piece in an outstanding carpentry shop in Old Cairo under continuous round the clock inspection and quality control.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Being extremely jaded that the present commercial trend in furniture manufacturing almost bears a close resemblance, wanted to make a point that deriving from rich historical heritage no matter what its descendent culture is and transforming it into a contemporary design is not only applicable but provides each piece with nostalgic uniqueness whilst maintaining a hip fresh look. From that notion, my options were limitless; our human history is filled with artistic jewels derived from numerous assortments, whether categorized by regions, epochs or by a traditional culture and folklore for a distinctive group of people. The collage of souls I determinedly endeavor to proceed in our designs to combine handcrafted, ethnic spirit with cutting edge contemporary designs in attempt to transcend the boundaries of normality. Creating a character for each piece and a story behind every innovation is my vision to introduce an idea that is far from being soulless and would unfortunately mirror pure commercialism. I genuinely believe that never outdated handmade craftsmanship anchors identity, while a modern influence in some accents or finishes breathes freshness and trendiness. The privilege we have today as designers is the variations of artificial materials beyond the rich source of elements nature provides. That paved way for my profound admiration of mixing the warmth of natural materials such as wood, marble or stone with clean cut additions such as cast iron, stainless steel or glass. This distinctive piece “Baboor “ has been inspired by the traditional known “Primus stove “ that has been a mandatory equipment for more than a century and still has its abundant usage till this day in some areas throughout the world . It is a reminder of one of numerous items, that were once a prestigious commodity and as time went by has shadowed extinction into an antiquity yet still a master piece. The contradictory aspect between the usage of materials in this piece and its original finishing, is what gives it its individuality, whilst the old item was made of copper and steel elements, the “Baboor Table” is made of durable solid hand crafted beech wood, with contemporary finishing elements whether veneered polish or lacquered paint for the body and colored glass top, this provides limitless color palette possibilities that would appeal and be coherent with any interior. The possibility in addition of stainless steel whether in framing the glass top or the anti- scratch leg guards further adds touches of modern material accentuations.

CHALLENGE:
The challenging aspect of that design was dependability on the rich practice of handcrafted wood. A talented, artistic occupation that reveals uniqueness of every work of art that is close to extinction, in face of modern technology in mass production .I always found it quite contradictory and disappointing that whilst we as a race are progressing technologically we are hindering behind in crafty art, a mesmerizing feature that distinguished and drew the face of styles and eras throughout history. It was far from an easy task to seek and revive such a unique talent and reintroduce it in trendy distinguished pieces, especially if we are intending to mimic an item in hand made wood carving in a method very similar to sculpturing art pieces.
