Interview with Chizen Shimoda at Monday 11th of March 2013

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
CS: This dish is inspired from the Pythagorean Theorem. The theorem comes up with me to express the mathematics beauty as modern design. And also the golden ratio include to calculate every part of layouts, thus circles, hexagons, and triangles are well balanced in a product.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
CS: The main focus is to express the mathematics beauty as modern design. The golden ratio apply as nature rule of the every part of design.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
CS: I will sell this awarded design with the manufacturing company as production in the world.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
CS: The design time took only a few days by 3D CAD software, however it took several months to find out the manufacture due to special design.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
CS: I have been interested in art, architecture and other design long time. After the mega earthquake in Japan at 11 March 2011, I would like to express something because I have been to think life is short. So I started design by 3D CAD software with my inspiration and pursued the manufacture to create real product with me.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
CS: My design is being produce as original product under my brand. The product will be sold around the world.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
CS: The inspiration and 3D CAD design was fun!

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
CS: Every great artist, design work and nature were helped the influence the design of my work.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
CS: The target customer is everyone around the world.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
CS: It is apart from original inspired the design and high quality craft work by Japanese manufacture.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
CS: As the design is based on the Pythagorean Theorem, I named this as just Pythagoras.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
CS: 3D CAD software is the main tool, and the secret tool and know-how in the manufacture.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
CS: It is unique aspect that used golden ratio and simple design, but strong geometric design impact on the dish.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
CS: A high technique and high quality company helped to realize manufacturing part. It has much special technique and know-how in the company.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
CS: To realize thin, light and beauty product, the cooperate company use bone china as material.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
CS: No. I just make the design all the product from my inspiration.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
CS: It was very hard to realize the concept due to unique design, so I contacted many companies which have been created the porcelain product during several month. Finally, I could meet the high technology and high quality manufacture in Japan.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
CS: I would like to challenge what kind of impact will my designed dish make in the world. And also, I would like to know the judgement from point of view by 3rd party.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
CS: I learned many 3D CAD software operation work from basic to advanced. In addition, I learned realization is also need other skills to create the product, thus I respect all the person who support to me.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
CS: The life is uncertain, nobody knows what things happen in the future. Actually, I changed my life from an employee to establish a small company after the mega earthquake in Japan at 11 March 2011.
